Castle Crashers is one of the best 4 player co-op games around

TMNT 1989 Arcade Game.

X-Men Arcade.

NFL Blitz, if you all are football fans. (only 2 player co-op.)

Warhammer 40K Kill Team (Excellent twin stick shooter)

Dungeon Defenders is amazing AND has 4 player local coop in the demo to see if you all like it. It can be hard however to read the stats on some of the loot you pick up while in splitscreen.

Lord of the Rings: War in the North. This game has experienced a lot of glitches since being released, however after the patch released recently I haven't experienced anything troublesome. This is an excellent local co-op game. Only issue I have with it is the fact that what you say in the narrative never really matters.

Crash of the Titans. (I love me some Crash Bandicoot)

ANY of the Dynasty Warriors games. Well except Gundam. That one gets stale quickly.

Either of the Earth Defense Force games. These are technically shooters but as long as the difficulty isn't high up it doesn't really matter, just crazy co-op fun.

Any of the lego games.

MARVEL ULTIMATE ALLIANCE! This is probably the best game on the list given your criteria. It has excellent 4 player local, with a huge cast of characters to play around with. Make sure to get the gold edition if at all possible. If you all like it there's also the sequel, but I haven't played that one so I can't comment on it.

FEAR 3. Campaign is co-op, and I'm almost certain the offline MP AI bots are splitscreen as well.

Dungeon Defenders, Borderlands, Gears of War 2/3 (Horde is a blast) Rainbow 6 Vegas 2. If youre feeling a bit cute, the LEGO games are really good fun.

Resident Evil 5, Gears of War series come to mind. Portal 2 I think is also local coop for 360 although I played it on PC and it was great.

If you have gamecube, ps2 or original xbox I would recommend Conflict Desert Storm 2, very fun 4-player coop shooter.

edit: oh sorry I didn't see the part about your friend not liking shooters, in which case I have no suggestions other then to tell them to suck it up and deal with it.

No problem! Cooperative gaming is in my opinion the way games were meant to be played.I also remembered having a TON of fun with Aegis Wing a long time ago, and it's free too! ;) Also, if you all enjoyed rayman and splosion man I would DEFINITELY look into N+. Me and a close friend had a blast with that game a long time ago. And oh, there's also Crimson Aliance, which I've never played but I've heard the co-op is good. Look up a website called cooptimus also, an entire website dedicated to helping you find co-op games, I use it all the time.

Easily Ms. Splosion Man or NFL Blitz.

I'm also a big fan of fight night or NHL locally.

fear 3 is great, my sister had never played a shooter before and we completed it in one sitting (that addictive!) you play as point man (typical shooting mechanics) and fettel who has telekenetic powers, using LT to grab an enemy, hovering him up in the air, and RT to 'blast' while hovering an enemy you can 'morf'into them, which allows you to have a gun... but this only lasts for a limited amount of time.
Check out some videos it's not your normal fps, and you'll end up making tactical moves with your friend to beat an enemy.
