Do you prefer traditional turn-based like Lost Odyssey or more MMO style like Oblivion??????

MMOs aren't like Oblivion... but I do like Oblivion more than Lost Odyssey... I am not a big fan of JRPGs at all... and it is not because of the turn based gameplay... it is simply because I don't like the stories and characters of those types of games... I am not really into big hair/big swords...
Well Lost Odyssey isn't really a big hair/big swords game but it is very much a traditional JRPG.
I still prefer Oblivion by a bit though.
Is this even Lost odyssey vs. Oblivion or turn-based vs. real-time combat?
Anyway i prefer turn-based combat because it just feels more exciting to me. I love needing to use strategy rather than just jumping in with a sword and using brute force.

what is the main difference between Oblivion and a MMO????? (I have tried WOW and it seemed pretty similar)
I enjoyed Lost Odyssey's old school Turn Based RPG. I thought the game was epic, however, I can only play a turn based RPG only so often. Will probably wait a year or two before I have the desire to dive into one again.
As for Oblivion, that game was just godawfull BORING!

I think a little of both. Just curious what you guys think about these games and the overall styles as well

Oblivion has FPS gameplay... where you attack with one attack button... with the one weapon you have equipped or the one spell you have selected... Are you sure you played WoW? In WoW there is a user interface where you select different attacks... there can be dozens of different attacks at once... and you don't press click to shoot or something like that... You choose an attack/spell and it is used, then you choose another... and another... and you repeat until your foe is dead...
Well in that case i preferred Lost odyssey. The story was great, the enemies were more varied, bosses are epic, dreams were beautiful, actually cared about the characters, and i felt a need to complete the game to find out what was going to happen. Oblivion felt like a game about nothing besides exploring it was fun but i prefer a good story and nothing really gave me reason to complete the storyline.

ohhhh, i see what you mean. I didn't get really deep into it but I guess interactive complexity would really separate them. It just seems new RPG's are becoming more like WoW or Oblivion with large, open environments and more fast paced real time action verses the older style of Lost Odyssey

That's not really an element of RPG's... other games have been doing that for years now... they are called sandbox/free roam games...

I dont mean that overall idea or programming of that particular element, but more specifically that applied to RPG's (and on the 360). It obviously has been around on PC's for a really long time, but sandbox/free roam has really begun to change the entire face of console RPG's, and it is interesting to see what you guys think about this transition and contrast in relation to a real world example such as Oblivion and Lost Odyssey.

Oblivion is a masterpiece, as Lost Odyssey has very slow and boring combat. If Lost Odyssey had real-time combat like Oblivion then it would have been soo much better, because the story is really interesting.
i HATE RPGS.....Tiger5hark
You have Fallout 3 on your list ... :|
The term RPG is kind of too broad anyway, as it really can be applied to most games nowadays. It stands for Role-Playing Game, which obivously has origins with D&D with a strict guideline of:
action attempt - roll - success or failure - rinse, repeat
But now a lot of games take structure or ideas from traditional RPG. If you play a game that has you assume the role of a fictional character (95% of all games) who you can customize to some extent (50% of all games) and that allows you choices that will alter the story (25% of games) then you are playing an RPG. Lesser concepts like a physical char. editor, a robust merchant/currency economy, magic, lots of story via cutscenes or dialogue, and/or just a long a** game in general all stem from RPGs.
Ah ... RPG, the greatest video-game concept EVER.
P.S. Oblivion hands-down.

Lol anytime someone posts about Lost Odyssey I can always count on you to be there. Totally agree. I love JRPGS or RPGS that follow turn based systems. It may seem 'old school' but it works, a lot better than experimenting with wierd real time gambit chain garbage. I want to give them orders and strategically beat my opponent, not run around in circles while the enemy spins due to poor AI and my teammates hack and slash at it without any input from myself...The following post is an opinion and should not be mistaken for bias or hate toward fanboy's prize possesion game : Oblivion IMO was boring and hack N' slash combat can only keep you entertained for so long before it just gets stale, I like L.O. combat system because it involves a more in-depth strategy rather than " my sword larger than your sword, my sword win" combat.
I can't comment on LO vs. Oblivion, since LO's been put on hold for me until finals are over/graduation.
But in terms of turn-based RPGS vs. more action-oriented, I prefer the gameplay of the action but I generally prefer turn-based for the story and characters. Obilivion was a lot of fun, but like someone else said, it didn't push you to beat the story. In fact, during all three of my play-throughs, I always worked on the main quest after I was already done with all of the guilds. And personally, I thought the Mage's Guild storyline was much better than the actual main questline. It almost offers you too much to do and distracts you from what is supposed to be the entire setup for the game. As much as I love Mass Effect, it even occurs there with a lot of the side missions.
I would rather play games like Oblivion, but i do love turn based games like Lost Odyssey.
But Oblivion and Lost Odyssey arent really comparable.
I think they need to make Turn based RPG's where you create and customize your character, and can find different armor and weapons and is sort of open world, that would make things different.
but traditional turn based rpgs are still amazingly fun.
