what is the difference between the two? if i get the original can i play against people playing colonies? what is the community like on each?

I think LP Colonies has a lot more extra content, eg. maps. You probably can't play against everyone if you only have the normal edition because you won't have the maps, but they're most likely on marketplace, so you can just download them.

Sadly they are two seperate games and are uncompatible, my friend has the original lost planet but he can't mmet up with me because since they are two seperate games. it was a mistake on capcoms part by doing that but hopefully Capcom if they make a Lost planet 2 that they will consider it.

the new edition has some new playable characters, a few new guns, some new maps, thats about it. I would just keep the original.
