17.7m 360's sold at roughly 350$* = around $6.195 billion$

software attach rate of 6.9 x 60$** x17.7m = around 7.327billion$

Grand total of 13.522 billion$$$ dolars

The average 360 owner spends around 770$ on the 360(just the console)plus games.

This total doesn't even include hardware peripherals or xbl or xbl points...crazyness!!!

*i figured around this number because it's the middle bundle and it's sold the most. I can't be too sure b/c prices around the world vary for the price of 360 as well.

**Most games are sold at this price point, and like i said above prices globaly could change this figure.

You are not factoring in things like game production cost and hte fact that the 360 costs more to make than they sell it for. The only company making money on hardware sales is Nintendo.

As for software sales, the fituires are also not accurate. They make less for third party sales than they do for first party. Anything developed in house is going to make them alot more money than say....Call of Duty 4.

I agree that they are making no profit on hardware sales...as of the moment. All i'm trying to point out is the money we have paid to m$.

Well your topic title said "M$ has made $13 billion", which implies they are making a profit of that amount

They couldn't have, the 360 warranty expenses would have had to have cost them much more then they made. Unless the expense was pushed to the next financial year.

It was pushed back to the previous year I believe. And wasn't it reported that MSFT was making money on the 360 finally. It cant be that expensive to make anymore.

They don't earn the RETAIL prices for the products they sell. Nor have you accounted for the MASSIVE replacement and production costs of anything. (Oh yeah, and XBL ISNT free for them to run, that's why we PAY for it) Don't come in here unless you're educated, which you aren't. Ignore this topic.

Yeah, you're right about the warranty expenses being pushed back to the last fiscal year. I still don't think they're making money off of the 360 hardware itself, but I could be wrong.

Oh, and to clarify my previous post, I learned that the divisions that house Xbox have actually had two profitable quarters. It was the first profitable quarter for the entertainment and devices division that currently houses the Xbox, mostly thanks to Halo 3. But another division that used to house the Xbox, the home and entertainment division, also turned a profit near the end of 2004. 3 guesses to which game helped them with that. =P

Oh, and here's my source.

You do realise Microsoft and even Sony both actually make loses on hardware and make money via firmware, sometime in their product life that does change and they do begin to make a profit on hardware by cutting production costs e.g. buying cheaper raw materials. Also Microsoft have spent i believe $1.9 Billion alone just repairing xbox 360's.
Im not sure if this has changed but at launch Microsoft was losing $126.00per xbox 360 probably a little less now but i highly doubt they are making a profit on it yet. The rest of the hardware such as controllers were actually making profits. As the controller only cost $11.00 to make and probably cheaper now as they would be supplied in larger ammounts. Microsoft isnt making as much money as you think from the xbox 360 although its a huge comeback since the original.

Links to support my theory:
