They include the basic biotic powers like pull and shockwave and their special ability (all classes have different special abilities) is charge where you can perform a powerful charge towards the enemy. They can use submachine guns, heavy pistols and heavy weapons (by default, all classes can use em')and i think shotguns. Later in the game...

Soldier is the sort of "default" class, but it is still the best... They can use all weapons apart from SMGs... They get all types of upgraded ammo (apart from Warp which you get after beating the game and getting the ally achievement related to it, which I think is Jack)... They get adrenaline rush which allows them to slow down time, allowing them to hit a target with several burst in the time they would normally only get 1 burst...
Pretty good starter class since you will rely more on guns and cover than tech/biotic abilities... Those are better for a second run through, which I recomend a Vanguard for...
Soldier or Sentinel or infiltrator. in higher difficulties the vanguard is useless, the adept's biotics are nerfed to hell since they don't effect enemies with protection(90% of their total health), and the engineer is imo the most underpowered. Soldiers do the most damage, sentinels are like tanks and have biotic and tech powers, and the infiltrator is a sniper with camo.
I played as a vanguard and I had priblems with charge, it's to offensive.
