mass effect 2 normandy upgrades

IF you upgrade your ship does it actually help you later on? or is there no point in it? thanks for the help

One last thing to note. I believe that if you dont upgrade any part of your ship you die on the final mission. Dont quote me on it a could be wrong, never tried it but heard it from a friend.
