Seems like the universe has more to worry about than just the return of the reapers.

According to an Amzaon listing here is the leaked details on the plot of Mass Effect 2.

"The second chapter in the Mass Effect trilogy "takes you to the darkest reaches of space, where you must uncover the mystery behind the disappearance of humans across many worlds. "Prepare yourself for a suicide mission to save mankind. Travel the galaxy to assemble a team of soldiers and combat specialists, and launch an all-out assault on the heart of enemy territory."

Cool, I wonder if they're reffering to Shepherd though? Maybe they'll hint at whether he's dead or not?

Weren't they pretty much wiped out in the first one? Or are there still remnants of the Reapers left?

Pretty sure Sheppard "prevented" them from coming into the galaxy but only one of them was destroyed.

Dude WTF?!? Im watching sunshine right now as i type this. Its such an amazing movie, highly underated imo.

On topic i think that the story news sounds intriguing, mass effect is my favorite xbox game and second favorite (soon to be) series. I hope cerberus has a prominent role in the game and isnt just some side missions like in the first. I have faith in bioware that they will deliver :D

That would be incredible if the Repears appeared in humanoid / synthetic form!

I think it would own if they couldn't escape Dark Space as ships, now that the Citadel is secure, but they could as humanoids. Like jet-black Geth Primes or similar.

Cerberus will have a prominent role I know this from reading Mass Effect : Ascension and the official website shows the cerberus logo when the Mass Effect 2 teaser is shown.

Spoiler: Shepard is the Geth you saw. He ended up like Saren. Normandy was captured and indoctrinated by the reapers /spoiler

Just joking. Now that I have your attention, please read on.

People who refuse to beleive Shepard is dead, or even not the main character, are lacking imagination. Seriously.

The beauty of Mass Effect was partly the fact that the character was your way of 'Rising to the top' in the world of Mass Effect. They grew in popularity slowly, starting as a nobody, ending as the savior of the universe.

In this new game, I pray to whichever god exists that they DO NOT recycle Shepard. Putting me in another characters shoes, allowing me to feel that satisfaction of becoming something my AI peers respect. It is all a great thing. I would love it if Shepard was, instead of the main character, a recruitable member of my team.

For me, playing him again mean I am starting out as the hero. This is no fun for me, I don't want to start out as the amazingly well known hero/spectre. I want to be a nobody and make myself a somebody. That is the best part of the Mass Effect world, that is what makes us delve deeper. Shepard saved the world already, everyone who once thought of him as a minor thing now either respects him or fears him. He got to shine, I want to make another hero shine.

Get what I mean?

I understand exactly what you mean and feel the same way mostly I always imagined that in the Mass Effect 2 you would play as the newest member to Shephard's team a rookie of the alliance under the Shepherd that you created. But I also feel that Shepherd's job is not done yet he may have stopped one reaper but there are plenty more and he deserves to finish his fight. Also Shepherd isn't just the hero he's also hated in many places like the Terminus System where his/her being a Spectre means nothing. Also I believe Casey Hudson already stated that the Mass Effect Trilogy will revolve around Commander Shepherd. But you never know, with a game like Mass Effect with such a rich story the possibilities are endless.

I want a character completely unconnected to Shepard. A completely blank slate to work with. I want to then meet Shepard, whether early on in a battle or later on as someone you rescue. I feel involving Shepard too directly can again, take away from the amount of YOU you can put into it. I don't want to start a Hero, I don't want to be part of the Normandy. I guided Shepard and his team through stormy waters, now, even if I have to without those characters, I want to brave those same waters with a different person. Maybe make it so that your character meets Shepard at the halfway point or so BECAUSE of the achievements you manage in-game.

It was only Sovereign that was destroyed, and I find it unlikely that the Reavers would rely on just one ship to let them know when to reawaken and come out of hibernation in dark space. Given the 50,000 year cycle it may be around the time the Reavers would re-awaken automatically.

I'm really looking forward to ME2, I just wish they would clear up what they meant when they talked about being able to take your character from ME1 into ME2. I can see the pros and cons of doing it, but I would just like to know exactly what will transfer over. I enjoyed playing ME and would replay it to build a perfect character to bring over, but I don't want to do it and then find you've had your memory wiped and lost all your stats -the only thing to transfer over was your facial settings, or something useless like that

Sometimes starting the game knowing your the hero makes the game that much more fun. It worked for Halo (Master Chief)

You are probably right about the Reapers (I always get them mixed up with reavers from Firefly/Serenity) waking automatically, but if I remember correctly they lost their way into the populated galaxy when the citadel relay was shut down. Keeping your saves could mean that you will bring over your character or it could just be for recognizing story choices that were made in the original game. Possible spoilers: it would be weird running into Wrex/Ashley/Kaiden if they died in your previous game.

I wouldn't mind playing a character other than Shepard and building another hero. However, I think it would take away from Shepards character if he in any way ended up serving under a new character. He is a major figure now. You can't turn him into some peon in your party, maybe for a scene or two, but not for the game as a whole. He is a leader and a figurehead.

The Reapers have to still play a part in the story. The way the game ended clearly showed stated they are still coming. Obviously ME2 isn't going to be a firefight with them, but the story in one way or the other is going to involve the Reapers. And based on events in the game, Cerberus and the Batarians (not necessarily in that order or in association with each other) are definitely going to be involved.

Either way, playing as Shepard will always make me smile, but I'd be equally pleased playing another up and coming character of signifiance (like KOTOR1 to KOTOR2) as long as they don't take away from all Shepard has become. He is more than just some NPC now, he is the figurehead of Citadel Space.

Sometimes starting the game knowing your the hero makes the game that much more fun. It worked for Halo (Master Chief)

Mass Effect =/= Halo. Two different species of storytelling. Master Chief was a cardboard cutout character who was designed to mirror the attitude of the player playing AS him without too much in the way of 'Past' or 'Personal goals/vendettas'. He was a supersoldier fighting bad guys, unless you read outside material like the books, the rest of Master Chiefs character is manufactured in the imagination of the player. Mass Effect, as far as the first goes, is similar, but takes a different angle. You start the game as whatever kind of hero you would like to be, allowing it to make sense you would be involved with the Normandy. Then you must MAKE yourself go from Hero to Legend. This climb connects you to your virtual self, namely Shepard, in the first game which also connected you to the world better. I want that same feeling, the idea that everything I do and every choice I make is actually big for my character, will actually change how they think of him. After the first game, I don't think anyone would dare try anything against Shepard or his crew without being suicidal or high, or a mixture of the two. Shepard made the jump from Hero to Legend, which was immensely satisfying to play through. I want to feel that same satisfaction again.

Halo and Mass Effect should not even be mentioned in the same sentence together. One has one of the greatest stories in a video game, of all time, and the other has the depth of a kiddie pool. I'l let you guys guess which is the ladder.

After watching a test video from GDC on ign.com now I'm pretty sure that we will be playing as Shephard, names were never mentioned but the character shown has one of Shepherd's possible character models, also he wears N7 armor which could also just mean he's another member of the alliance.
