Unlike the first Mass Effect, the sequel will not allow players to restart the campaign with all the skills Shepard gained throughout his (um, her!) second adventure. Mass Effect 2 Lead Designer Preston Watamaniuk notes on the BioWare forums that the team is working hard to "offer a smooth progression into ME3 from ME2." The reasoning is that they "have to have reasonable knowledge" of where a character could end up at the end of the game. "Of course, Mass Effect 2 players can feel free to create a new character and start over. So, it appears that if you're looking to start Mass Effect 3 with a jacked-up Shepard, make sure to explore every little nook and cranny of the galaxy before going into the sequel's final mission."-Joystiq

-This is kinda stupid in my opinion, playin' back through countless times in part 1 to level up my guy (or girl) was one of the reasons I liked the game so much. First they take away our leveled up charcter from part 1, now we can't even level a new guy up in part 2! WTF

lame. ive played through a few times with my character already. if they wanted to have "super progression," then just release the games side by side. otherwise, dont do this. irregardless, im sure the game will have more than enough amazing parts to make up for this crappy one.

It better, or its going back! (game purchace tip, buy a used copy of a game from gamestop, and you have 7 days to play it, and if you don't like it, you can return it for anything else)

Then they better not have reach level X acheivements. Level 60 took me three playthroughs to get.

So I feel like a bit of an idiot, as I didn't know you could play through the campaign with the same character. I got into the 50s with one character, being very thorough, and I was trying to figure out how the hell you get the Level 60 achievement.

So basically, after you've finished your game you can't restart the story with a leveled up guy? That seems rather stupid to me. Especially since it's an RPG I would like to be able to level myself up as much as I can, that's the fun in doing missions and so on, so you can create a tougher character.

I don't care about being a level 50+ on a new game but not being able to replay with each character is a bummer.

I wish they would just clear up the issue of what happens to our characters from ME1 into ME2 - do we get to keep them with their stats and skills? or does it just bring over plot choices? I'm tempted to re-run through my Infiltrator to get it up to 60 and be perfect for ME2, but don't want to do it and find out none of that will be worth doing.

I guess no one has played a Final Fantasy game. To my current knowledge (I've played most of them post-7), you haven't been able to restart with the same character. From an RPG and story standpoint, it doesn't make sense to have your character be a jacked out level 40 something at the beginning of the game because that's not how reality works. I know these are just games but if you started at level 1 before, having no experience towards the character, why should you be able to start later having massive experience towards them. Don't get me wrong, I like the ability to keep stats and have a jacked out guy at the beginning of a game on a subsequent playthrough. I know that sounds hypocritical here, but if Bioware thinks it's better for the progression of the story to not allow for subsequenty playthroughs then they probably have something epic planned for ME3

Ican see where there going. If you have a level 60 character, what else is there to achieve in the game other than finishing the story? Also wouldn't the game be really easy if you have a level 60 character? I don't know I only got to level like 35 before i stopped playing.

I think they're going to try to have more continuity between the two games so maybe they'll have a way where the character will carry over completely and they don't want anyone to be completely maxed out when they start playing. There is something up their sleeve to where this makes perfect sense.

It's easy to get through ME1 without jacking yourself up. Even on Insanity. I have no problem at all with this decision.

I'm not too worried about this anyhow. I'm still not sure how they are going to balance ME2's continuation with character stats. I mean with the new DLC for ME1 it seems you can stat pad your character pretty well already. In fact I figured they would probably just have "environment continuation" rather than stat continuation if you know what I mean.

I'm good with whatever because honestly as a stand alone or a continuation game it's looking to be very good. That said I have been holding off finishing ME again (this time as renegade) in fear it will bring him into the new game as such. Right now I'm only about 1/3 the way through it again after having finished it with whatever you call the good guy way.. errr the light side.. paragon?

That's cool with me. When I replay RPGs I usually do it and roll with a different party and level up totally different than I did in the past. Zero effect on me. The only "bad" part is that in Mass Effect 1 you would start a continued game and all of your party would have like 50 points that you could spend and totally re-spec them. I'll miss that, but it's not a game breaker and when it was there it kinda felt like a glitch.

I know that it wont, but I wish this game would be like a JRPG where you can grind in dungeons. JRPGs have mediocre combat but they let you play as much combat as you want. WRPGs usually have much better combat, but you can't grind and there's usually either a pretty low maximum level or only a set amount of enemies in the game and once you kill them they will never come back.

They should allow multiple playthroughs with the same character, but have the 3rd reognize and only allow characters that have been through once.

First of all, the Joystiq article, if quoted correctly, is kind of misrepresenting how your character starts off in ME2 to begin with. You are only carrying over the decisions you made in ME1. Not your character stats. So you aren't even starting ME2 with a jacked up character anyway. That said, you guys are right. They are trying to make it easier to handle the story's continuity between ME2 and ME3 by not allowing you replay with ME2 with the same character. I guess there are several extremes as to what the outcome will be in ME2 and ME3 has to be able to interperet that. And since your ME2 character is based off of your ME1 character, that's two games that ME3 has to trace back to determine its starting point. So this decision is purely story driven. It has nothing to do with carrying over a jacked up character to ME3.
