You pretty much have to, you'll get your ass whopped if you start with a new character.-Montauk-
But the difficulty is scaled. The enemies are hard, but if you start out new they won't be as tough as if you started with your previously played person. I just dont want to beat Hardcore by changing it at the beginning, then not getting the achievement because it says "dont change the setting".

It's still very hard, the first time I tried with a new character and it was really hard. It's still hard even with an old character but you at least have more of a chance of surviving. And you just have to change the setting before you finish the Eden Prime mission.
haha, it's insane hard with a new character. Thresher takes a million years to kill, enemies all have advanced shields, snipers kill you in one shot and you have no defenses. I've died a hundred more times than ever! I guess thats what happens when you play an unlocked level. Well I learned my lesson- i'm changing the difficulty so I can at least survive the battles, I really really don't think it's "scaled" to fit your level as you say. It's scaled way up beyond it for sure though!
The thing is I was tired of my first character- I suppose I could go to a previous save and use that for the achievements, then start brand new on a lower setting with my new one.
