WTF it sounded all good till you said 18-30 hours long thats a massive difference. I heard 30-40, can i have a link please.ct1257860
You probably heard 30-40 by either A) A Developer, who always uses the highest number they ever can for game length, or B) An early preview of the game where the previewer was simply estimating. It's the type of game where you put as much or as little into it as you want.
Anyways, looks good... I haven't read the review, but the "every second of gameplay offers the visual quality that you would see in a final fantasy cutscene" is very intriguing :).
For those of you who don't have gameinformer(whoever that is) it got a 9.75 and some thing they said about it are every second of gameplay offers the visual quality that you would see in a final fantasy cutscene. They also go on to say that it has one of the greatest science fiction stories ever told. And its 18 to 30 hours long. Sounds pretty sweet to me.Darkmagicm12
Read the book. Stoked to experience more of the story. Good stuff.

Yeah it looks pretty sweet, but I am going to get COD 4 or Assassin's Creed over Mass Effect due to budget constraints (I can only afford one game at the moment) and not having enough time at the moment. College does have it's downside.
Do you guys thint that it means 18-30 hours for the main story or overall?bessy67
I think that is just the main story.
I'm happy about the review. However, I am very pissed off that they think that Bioshock (10/10) is a better game than Mass Effect, Halo 3, and Orange Box (all of which got 9.75/9.75). So I do very much doubt their credibility.
I also got that magazine, was a bit disappointed in the review. I guess im used to pc gamers like 4 page's of review when they do get a exculsive review. Anyways they gave like 4-6 games a 9.75 that issue I believe. So either there grading became alot more standard or alot of great games all in one magazine.
Also I think 30 hours make sense because remember so much changes just based off your choices. If you make a new character and say different thing it sounds like you'll get different crew others may turn on you and your ship when you escaped may now not and then you have a different set of missions.
So I think its 100ish hours with replaying the game several times cause each time is like playing it again with all the Choose your own adventure style of options.
GOTY Mass Effect will last longer than 30 hours as long as you don't bullet through it. There are too many planets to explore for it to take less than that. A replay-or-two later and you've got 100 hour potential even :)

Does a game really need to be 100 hours long? Do people not get bored? Maybe it's me, I don't know.

Just my guess, but I assume he means the main story. Being how early they got a review out, its probably all the reviewer managed to play.
18-30 doesn't sound too shabby, but I'm sure I shadow everyone elses thoughts about it as well. "Hopefully the side stuff will make it last longer."

I hear you on that one. 30 hours is perfect. But then again I can basically buy all the games I want, so length doesn't matter to me, jut fun factor.
I'll start by saying Mass Effect is has already become one of my favorite all time RPGs on any console / platform. Some of my other favs are Fallout 1/2, Ultima Underworld, Morrowind and games of the sort. My total play time was 32 hours after I beat the game and I left plenty of side quests unfinished. Why? So I can replay the game all over again and still discover new stuff. That's the beauty of this RPG - it has incredible replay value. You can play the game twice or more and see a lot of different things (i.e. 1st play with a Paragon male and 2nd play with a Renegade Female) and that's not even considering all the classes.
The gameplay time will vary. It depends on several factors:
#1 - Will you do the sidequests? The game has tons of side quests. If you do them all, the side quests alone can add at least 10+ hours to the experience.
#2 - What difficulty? Playing at the higher difficulties will mean you will have to replay certain situations a few times over, adding total time played.
#3 - Will you read the codec entries? With the primary (voiced) and secondary (text) codecs offering tons of information on the Mass Effect universe, those who are involved in the story and don't mind reading will find hours of interesting stuff to read.
#4 - Will you check every nook and cranny for bins and containers? Lots of hidden goodies lying around.
#5 - Will you bother decrypting containers? At the end of the experience, combined time decypting (mini-game) can extend the total time by an hour or more.
#6 - Will you explore all the dialog options and speak to your crew after each main quest element or go through the Citadel and talk to everyone? Just this stuff, main quest aside, can easily occupy a good 5 hours or more.
All in all, I'd say the general player will get around 15-25 hours while the more geeky players who will read the codec entries al do all side quests can easily get 40+ per playthrough.
