Short? Did you do EVERYTHING in mass effect? Not that short. Not to mention the replay value the game has.
Get Mass Effect. Oblivion is fun for a while but after a 20 hours of doing the same things over and over again, it becomes more annoying than fun.

Oblivion goty edition is like the orange box of fps. It gives you a lot of bang for your buck. You could play it 100+ hours before your bored.
Story- Mass effect. Oblivion had a good story, but you could finish it in 10 hours.
Graphics- Tie. Now mass effect has better graphics, but oblivion runs a lot better. Mass effect has some really bad framerate issues.
Gameplay- Oblivion, but by a small hair. Mass effect is more of an rpg, while oblivion can be played like an action game. The entire game scales with you in oblivion, so you don't have to level up.
I'm going to go with oblivion *game of the year edition is what you should get though, unless you only have about 30$*. But do at least rent mass effect. Someday, you'll probably want to pick it up as well.
Oblivion is the horrilbe child of RPG and Hack and slash.
It's not a bad game but it certainly lost it's way during development and if you've played many great rpgs you can see that it isn't anything more than "good".
Yeah, you could finish the MAIN quest in about 10-15 hours but you dont because there is so much more to do than just the main Quest. Guilds, random people give you quests, you can explore Tamriel, caves, ruins, towns, farms, oblivion gates to shut etc. etc. etc. Its more than just the main quest...Oblivion goty edition is like the orange box of fps. You'd be well advised to disregard the above. Oblivion is worth the 9+ score it averages, and its alot more than just "good".

Thank youYou're welcome.
I think the thing with Oblivion is that theres so much open-ended gaming there, it can almost be a deterent to those RPGers who are used to "go here next" signs. If you need to be told where to go and you can only handle worrying about one "quest" at a time, Oblivion can be a bit overwhelming.
