Mass Effect personally is one of my all time favourite games and so i don't see why gamespot only gave it 8.5 while giving the overly repetitive Assassins creed a 9. I know that some people dont like the combat but i'd like to know what you think, did Mass Effect deserve a higher score?

i think underrated get thrown around a little too much, when it came out it was huge and its overall score on gamerankings is almost 91% so i dont see at all how it would be underrated

But just in with some comparison to other games such as Assassins and Halo 3 which are usually rated much higher when i dont think they offered as much as Mass effect had to offer - but thats my opinion.

It was only underated on Gamespot. Other sources gave generous scores of 9.0 and higher, with the few exceptions of 8.5's here and there. But overall, AAA title. Gamespot review clearly stated framerate issues, bugs and glitches, and bad squad member A.I. They also complained that the UI interface menu used to select abilities (while pausing the game at the same time) broke down the gameplay - combat. Messy inventory, controlling the Mako was terrible, and sidequest planets looked all the same. If it werent for those cons, it would have earned a 9.0 rating. Personally, I feel Mass Effect is a 9.0. And if I were to rate it any lower, it would be for those reasons too. Fortunately, they all seemed like minor problems to me, and they easily could be overlooked.

You know I think it is the other way around and I would call it very overrated.

Mass Effect was a fantastic game and I am a big fan of it. But, like you said, opinion is opinion. When it comes to reviewing Mass Effect, you have to think of all the glitches and visual bugs in the game. If the game ran smoothly, it may have scored better. That is a major frustration I have with it.

gamespot is terrible at rating games...but they are not as bad as netjak...they gave ME a 54%...without that rating it would have probably had a 93 percent overall rating on gamerankings.com...anyway this site sucks hardcore now..gamespot site is a joke now (no reviews and when they do they suck at them, and now the only thing good about the site, the forums are going downhill, less and less ppl on them)

i would agree with you there slightly as i thought M.E. was a little too easy, still a good game well scripted, good visuals familiar controls nut i think it was just a little too easy.

A.C. is about the same in fact i think these two games could quite easily be the same game with different images as both tend to follow the same sort of gameplay path. ie.. kill mini bosses to get to the big boss.

Agreed. Not a bad game, but didn't live up to the hype for me. Maybe I expected too much.

I thnk it is slightly underrated. It only has the best story a video game has ever had. The graphics I thought were fantastic for the size of the game. The facial expresions/texture were even better. But all said and done the freezing thing in battle was a bit different. Mass Effect in my books is the greatest RPG to date.

The game is outstanding but it has its share of problems. Dungeons all look alike, it has the worst texture popping I have ever seen in a game, uninspired visual design (I am not talking about graphical presentation), achievement bugs, and then some. This is coming from a huge fan of Mass Effect who played it through three times in a row... :P

A lot of people criticize the Mako combat, but then again I think a lot of people don't realize that there is a cannon and a zoom feature on its turret.

To sum it up, it is an amazing game but were I to have reviewed it, ME would also have recieved an 8.5.

I was actually fairly disappointed the first time I played it. I think I'm enjoying it more the second time around. I think the ratings are generally fair for Mass Effect.
