You can play it how you want. It plays slowly like an RPG usually does but you can also play it as a action/shooter.

well, because that's the type of game it is

its not a full action game

there is some strategy involved as well

if this isn't your kind of game, there are plenty of fast shooters out there

i saw that too. i think what it is is some sort of system where you control what you and your two teammates are doing at all times. it does seem kinda cumbersome at points because you have to constantly stop and choose a new task for your other member, etc. that did worry me too

It depends how you want to play. If you want to use a lot of tactics with your team (your group of people) then you will need to pause (which isn't pausing in a way) and move them then switch to more characters, rinse and repeat. Now you could play like i will were it is more i use one person (unless i have to use more) and pretty much run and gun if i can in that occasion.

Now Certain battles will need the use of more than one person and they allow this sort of pause feature so you can switch characters without being killed and being completely confused during battle when you switch. Look at it in the way of Kotor. You didn't have to "pause" the game if you didn't want to, but if you wanted a certain person to say throw a grenade and another to use their healing power then you may want to "pause" and set that up.

In Turn-Based games you get to plan out your whole move without the fear of dieing and it was Bioware's way of doing the same in a semi turn-based, realtime game.

COD 4 comes out the same month as this game if you don't like the gameplay of Mass Effect then get COD4 or be like me and grab both.

i think mass effect is predominantly an rpg, but very action packed and can be played as an action game as well. but again, the rpg elements are more dominant in the gameplay.

you dont have to. you can just charge in there balls out shooting aliens in the face without pausing to use abilities, or oyu can just quickly cast a shiled or whatever on yourself before you run in, or you can strategically plan what you and alll your teamates use. I'm going to play it mostly fps, but sometimes pausing to use abilities only in the most hectic battles

Awesome it is, the pause and action pacing is the way it's supposed to be. Don't forget this game is not a shooter as its primary genre but an RPG, so the strategy part is always there. And as you've seen in those videos, the players were using the features of the game to plan its team but if you don't feel like it, then don't. Just rush in like in Halo or Gow but don't be surprised why you end up dead in the end. The shooter is just a big add on to this WRPG game :)

To order your team around and stuff like that you need to select an option that pauses the game.

yes, count on that. very slow. if you want to use all of the powers and weapons and teammates, it's much more tacticall with a lot of pauses in the middle of the action.

If you want you can run and gun, but i suggest you play other games for that

It's not something that they need to fix because its a system that woks well. From the look of it, it seems to have the general combat mechanic from KOTOR which i loved because i like to strategize and think about what I'm going to do. Anways i cant wait for this game.

That is why I'm thinking of passing up on this game because of the combat system.... the pausing.... select weapon, shoot.... pause after finishing that mofo.... choose something else in the menu to kill the guy coming at me.... shoot.... pause again.... fall asleep.....etc. I'll learn more when the game is releasedand when I have read the previews in the forums.

Wow, are people really this clueless as to how combat works in Mass Effect? I just wish I could see the faces of theseguys on release day when they pop in the game disc expecting Gears of War in space... then of course the string of obscenities that will follow. Priceless.

Reading previews wont' help you much here. The only way to really get an understanding of how this system works is to have some hands on time with it. I suggest playing KOTOR first if you've never played a Bioware console game. The combat in Mass Effect should be similar to KOTOR's so you should be able to get a general idea of what you'll be in for. Pausing to make changes may look boring, but when you are actually doing it yourself, managing your character and your teamates actions, its more of a breather session as it can be a little hectic when you come up against strong enemies.

That is something unique to Bioware. If you ever played Knights of the Old Republic it was the same exact way. You can either pause and select your actions or you can select them in real time. It's basically up to you.
