I have never played a Mass Effect game, and I just bought both. I'm probably not gonna start them for a while cause I have some games to finish up first, but I was wondering, which of them is better? I see ME2 got better reviews, but some of my friends who are very hardcore about RPG games say that Mass Effect 1 is better and that ME2 was more streamlined to become more accessible to a wider audience. They say ME1 is more RPG while ME2 is more action and shooting.

Mass Effect was more of a RPG than the second, and for me the better game. More weapons, armor, abilities, etc, etc. However, the second was a more polished game (framerate, glitches, graphics, etc). Both were excellent games, but with Mass Effect, since the saves transfer and such, you should really play them in order.

I like Mass Effect 2 better, but it is very difficult to choose between the two, and honestly they are both amazing

Overall I like Mass Effect 2 more. I think it fails on a lot of things that I expected going in, but when removing ME1 from the equation it's a better game. - The lack of customization in defensive/offensive gear sucks compared to ME1, but ME2 is just a shooter so you don't really need that anymore. - I think the overall story is poorly handled in ME2, but the individual stories of the characters are as good if not better than anything from ME1. This seems to be a trend in BioWare games though. Dragon Age was the same way where the game is really about gathering a party more than completing any overarching storyline. - The shooting gameplay in ME2 is undeniably better than the first game. - The dialog system is better in ME2 - Level design is better in ME2 - Mining is worse than the Mako. Mako missions were mostly optional but you can't skip mining for crap unless you hack your save file or are willing to remove even more of the rpg elements from the game by not leveling up your gear.

I personally preferred ME, but after playing it, you pretty much have to play ME2. They are somewhat different but actually complement each other well IMO. Like your friends said, ME is more of an RPG, and ME2 is more of a straightforward third-person shooter.

Mass Effect is a better RPG by far. Mass Effect 2 is more combat oriented to suit a wider audience like a previous poster said. ME2 is more of a TPS/RPG hybrid than a real RPG like the first.

ME1 = RPG, ME2 = 3rd Person Shooter with some RPG elements. ME1 > ME2 for me

Mass Effect was way better RPG game than Mass Effect 2. I really don't like the tendency that BioWare are showing - great first installment and mediocre second one (both ME and Dragon Age series).

In for answer. I really disliked dragon age origins, the main characters looked silly (my fault I know) And had no personality. Combat was good though, strategic and challenging. But I just got bored and couldn't even finish it. DA2, different story. LOVED IT. Easily my favourite RPG/Pc game to date (minus TF2) I've never replayed a game before, dragon age 2 was my first :p.

Now I hated Mass effect was extremely slow and I just gave up about 30% in. So i'm wondering if i'll like ME2 (no thread hiijack..okay maybe abit) Is it more action packed and faster than the orginial?

ME1 has the better story, but ME2 wins overall in every other aspect. Both are incredible.

Someone said mediocre second game? Ha, that's funny. But hey, that's your opinion. I thought that the "RPG elements" that the so called "hard core RPG player" complained were missing from the second game were way overrated. The inventory system was clunky and you needed to babysit it because of the item limit. And you were forced to use some of that inventory to carry weapons for yourself and your NPC squad mates that you or they weren't even trained for. Depending on class of course. Too many duplicate items that you were going to sell for the better iteration anyway. But I like the direction they're taking the series. More high paced shooter is a good thing IMO. I don't get why people look at that as a knock on the game. It means that there's still some gaming skill involved rather than just depending on your stat line to get you through everything. And being more concerned about the decisions and actions of your character is more playing a role than babysitting skill points and inventory. That's just my opinion. All that said, I still really enjoyed the first game. I just thought that the second game was a natural streamlining of the first that really improved on the series.

ME2 is a dumbed down, rehashed, more polished version of ME. The only plus ME2 had, was the Inventory, but even that was scaled waaaaaaaaaaaaaay down. It is a fantastic game though, in its own right.
