Hi all. Just fishing for clues as to whether there is such a thing as an adventure game on the 360 which doesn't involve combat with enemy foes, but still has immersive exploratory gameplay. The genre could be horror, mystery, crime, fantasy, sci-fi, or anything else. It could be completely open-world without narrative, or it could be linear with narrative...or anything in between. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Types of games that don't count: point-n-clicky business ala Monkey Island or quicktime-a-thons like that old PC game Fahrenheit. And things like strategy sims, sports/driving games, puzzle-bobbles and cartoony kids' platformers are out. Also out are adventure games which have optional combat: like Skyrim, Deus EX, Grand Theft etc. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- From my own searching I think Portal 1 & 2 might be candidates. I've also just received LA Noire from a friend, that might not have combat in it. Any other suggestions? Cheers :)

by the way what is it with games forums and their non-functioning formatting? This is the third game forum I've registered with and all 3 can't format paragraphs and line spaces properly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Over the years all other forums I've used from non-gamer worlds have managed to do this very simple thing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Weird...

LA Noire has combat. In fact, combat is the only decent part of that game.

Amnesia is what you're describing. But that's on PC. Give it a try if you've got the resources.

Yeah, there's a ton of games on the PC I would very likely get addicted to, haha...but I'm restricting my gaming to just one console system. Shame there's no Xbox port of Amnesia, heard lots of good things about that.

thanks for the tip...I wasn't really looking for Arcade games. but it does look unique, tho' seems to play like a more languid, less action-packed Rayman. But the youtube gameplay videos are so enticing I just bought the game :)) From Live as a download it costs 15, so instead I bought it as a disc with two other games calles Trials HD & Splosion Man, which both look quite fun and all 3 games have good user reviews here. That disc, brand new, including postage to Germany also cost 15. Maybe Live Arcade games are overpriced? Especially as you can get epic older mainstream games in the used market for between 10-15 now.

It's not for Xbox 360 but if you happen to have a PS3 (I'm blessed to own both consoles) Heavy Rain is the perfect fit for your situation. Catherine (for Xbox and PS3) might also suit you as well, though it's a puzzle game primarily but with a great story.

You can't have a mature game that doesn't involve violence/horror of some kind.

Now that is an extremely limited world-view. Question: can you have a mature film or book that doesn't involve violence/horror in some way?

Yes, that's what I mean. It's a very limited world-view to think mature games must always have violence in them in order to be 'mature'. The industry needs to grow up. Then so might its users.

Why do you think you're being a prat? You're being very helpful :)) I thought Portal didn't have any combat. Still, if it does have it I guess it's relatively little. Another game recommended to me is I am Alive...after checking out a few youtube gameplay videos it also appears to be combatless...tho' maybe it does have the odd fight or two. Looks like my kind of game, tho'. And re: Catherine...the gameplay vids remind me of Kurushi (old PS1 puzzle game which i really liked).

Well I've never seen an 18 rated game that didn't involve violence of some kind.

[/QUOTE Yes, I know...that's what I mean by limited in that to be known as a "mature" game it has to have violence and an 18-certificate. Being mature doesn't mean things always have to be violent (or sexual). It means there are themes that only more mature gamers would be interested in, puzzles and tasks which require a mature intellect. To be fair to you even the movie industry struggles to provide examples of mature films that don't have violence or sex in them. It's been so indoctrinated in our culture that we struggle to see past it. But there are still many examples that would make great games: Bruce Willis's Armageddon would make a great game, as our objektive is to save the planet from a meteor, not from hordes of attacking aliens. Something inspired by Planet of the Apes would also make a great game. Yes, there is a little violence in how the apes treat the captive humans, but your objective isn't to fight back with violence, it's to communicate, explore and resolve mysteries. Orwell's 1984 would make a great game, as you struggle to bring about a revolution against a dystopian society. Here are 2 more movie examples of games I'd like to see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pi_(film) The game involves you as a mathematical genius as you begin to see patterns in everything. You become entwinded in a mystery involving the stock markets, the name of god and your own mind. The game would be a classic first-person or third-person engine (Unreal) and would let you do the normal things an action RPG would (talk with NPC's, build up inventory, go to various places on a map) but the game wouldn't require any combat situations because you're a mathematician, not a marine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Insider_(film) You play as an employee of a company and slowly find out that the company is hiding some grave secret. It doesn't have to be tobacco, it might be a food company who are hiding that some of their additives are causing cancer. Your objective is to gather enough proof to make a case against them and bring them down. To make the game interesting there could be anonymous threats of violence and bribes which are skilfully designed to throw you off the scent. But again there won't be any real combat because you're an office clerk who hasn't had a fight since pinching that boy on the cheek for nicking your marbles back when you was 10 years old. aaaanyway...there's no chance is there, really? I guess the key problem would be to keep the game interesting for gamers, and without combat situations this becomes difficult. The other problem is how to program the game's mechanics in such a way as to make gameplay interesting when it doesn't involve any combat situations. I guess if anything the ideal medium for these kinds of games would be the PC (which probably already has a few examples similar to the above ideas).

Its not combat in the sense of shooting people up or sword fighting or anything like that. Its just shooting a portal under a turret and shooting the exit portal out of the way. Like I said, very small combat but still a form of combat none the less.

check this out, the entire internets of the world (i.e. Google) only reveals 12 single entries of someone somewhere asking about "non-combat games" for the PS3 or Xbox 360: http://www.google.de/search?num=100&hl=en&safe=off&q=%22non-combat+games%22+%22ps3%22+%22xbox+360%22&oq=%22non-combat+games%22+%22ps3%22+%22xbox+360%22&gs_l=serp.3...7086.11171.0.12316.4.4.0.0.0.0.247.545.1j2j1.4.0...0.0...1c.DGHjxABWGbk That's nuts. I really am in a minority. If we change the search to "combat games" Google tells us there are more than 50,000 entries (not that we can actually find more than 1000 single results for any given search anyway, but that's another story). I did have more luck when I changed the search to "non-violent games", so at least there are a few of us out there looking for this kind of stuff. I'm optimistic the next-gen will regularly provide this kind of game.
