I knew MS wouldn't let us down. MS is creating adding a new Heatsink to the Xbox 360 for extra cooling. Link

personally, im excited about it not because of "cows" and thier opinions, but because when my xbox breaks and I have to send it in, I will get the new upgrade.

I have to knock on wood since mine is practically a launch system (built December 2005) and I haven't had any problems but it seems to be acting sort of weird lately. The giant blowing sound turns on and off and the ring on the 360 keeps on switching controller ports for some weird reason (even though I never lose connection with the controller.) Mine is under warrenty for another year but I am getting worried it might puke out on me right after its done.

Exactly. But also think even if you have to pay wouldn't you rather have it fixed (god i hope it fixes it) than to not have this change and have to send it in several more times? I think i'd rather bite the bullet and pay get the fix and be done with it rather than sending it in over and over

It's a shame when you go to the UPS store to drop your 360 off for repair they know exactly whats in the box. I've been told by so many UPS workers that they get thousands of 360's sent in for repair so you really can't think people are making this up. I won't give it long before your're in the same 360 breaking boat as us...give it time you'll see!

Hmmm, I was going to get my 360 in a few weeks, hopefully they'll have this new heatsink in the new units by then. If not, then I'll just wait.

So do people have to pay for this heatsink if their Xbox is out of warranty? Because this is an admission of faulty manufacturing as far as I can see. Microsoft can't charge people for something that Microsoft screwed up in the first place.

That's why they need to recall it, which I highly doubt they'd ever do. What is it gonna take, one of the 360's to burn someones house down before theyrecall it.

I JUST bought an elite 360 about 5 weeks ago. I already have to send it in. I take great care of my systems, this is unacceptable. I was told MS had a one year warranty, hopefully the extended warranty is still available as I'll be buying that ASAP. Hopefully this new heatsink will really help out...

i doubt it, they just announced it so it will take them some time(couple of weeks) for this to take effect. but who knows, cuz when you get your 360 back it's not like you can check. so for all we know MS could be bullcrapping this announcement :P

Also in regards to the overheating and warping of the motherboards, I read that M$ is only securing the motherboards to the chassis on the perimeter and not any interior tiedowns, do you think the new heatsinks will prevent this in the process.

m$ pays for shipping. If you want ups to pick it up at your house you may have to pay a fee. so just drop it off at the nearest ups store.

Is it just me or did Microsoft put aband-aid on their customer's severed leg when they extended the warranty to 1 year? The defect rate of the 360 is staggering to the point of absurd. Mine crashed and it took a month and a half to get a replacement. Worst customer service since Denny's. It'll take another week via reimbursed points to retrieve all of my old data from the hardrive to play offline content. I fully expect my 360 will crash again within another year. It's designed to implode.

I'm on my 5th going to be my 6th (read blog for story). And it's free shipping if you bring it to the UPS Store. The heating of the 360 causes the board to warp (to change size or shape) just enough to make some pieces of the board to disconnect. And there you have a hardware failure.

There is no crap, the comments about faulty hardwareare a REALITY. 2 have broke on me and i care for all my systems. When you're spending this kind of moneyyou shouldnt have to worry about seeing 3 lights whenyou turn on my system or crossingyour fingers when you download the latest update (fall update killed my first system). Simply, MS needs to fix this stuff fast and its pretty sad that they are only now confronting this issue.

So check it out. This thing is great if you have a console that is under warranty and something happens because you dont have to do anything except be patient because MS will take care of eveything no charge. I am on my 3rd console and I am so thankful for having purchased my year warranty. When I got my third console I went ahead and got the two year warranty on it. (practice safe gaming) As for now what about all of us who have consoles warranty or not that are worried about getting the ring of death. I think we should have the option of sending consoles in and getting the device installed they owe to all of us who have gone through two or more consoles. And why is there no word about this device on xbox.xom I mean that is the official site of all things gaming by Microsft. (RIGHT)

I have an Elite and it's still in the 1 year warranty. I've had no problems with it. Would it be a good idea if I sent it in so they can put that Heatsink? Also, I'm waiting for those 65nm chips.

I apologize if this is a bit off subject, but if you have the extra cash to spend, and really want to prevent ur system from overheating (or if u just want your system to run REALLY cool!) then here is a little something that you might want to check out. I have this installed onto my 360 (although it was a bit hard to do, this is by all means worth it). It is available in silver and black, but this link is for the silver one... just search the site if u prefer to have the black ones (recommended for those with the elite systems) http://www.xoxide.com/koolance-kit-xb360sl-sys.html

IMPORTANT!!!: Doing this to your system WILL void any warranty that has been placed on it! Do this at your own risk!

Enjoy your chilled 360 if u happen to purchase this :D

I am glad they are fixing that problem, but i will probably never really need it, i have had my 360 for a year now and it hasent overheated or brocken down yet...it is a pretty simple concept, if you play for 5 dam hours straight none stop, there is going to be heating problems....but for the people that dont know this, take a break every so often and possibly go outside, hang out with some friends, or just possibly have a life!!!

That looks sick especially the pics showing what it would look like installing it. IF my xbox is running and my warranty runs out I may look into it. But for now I'm good. Thanks for the info though.

Man I hear you but I had my first console for a year and a week when it just went out on me and I dont play for more than maybe two or 3 hours straight. The thing is, on xbox.xom, they say that if your console is over heating you only will get two red lights on the left quadrants of the circle. If you get the full circle of red lights that is a whole other problem. So most of the time we may think it is due to overheating and it may not be. When my console crapped out I was a half an hour into playing.

gamekingpin, u probably are right, some times it can because of bad luck, or just the system is getting old, or it can because of playin for hours on end.....i remeber one time i had a surge because my cord was ripped out by accident, it blinked with full red on all 4 corners, at first i thought it did overheat but the i notice the chord was out. i can see how that could be misleading seing how load the damn thing is
