http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/News/230934,microsofts-kinect-launch-laughs-at-sweaty-gamers.aspx

So, after reading this, and the recent announcement that they're actually RAISING xbox live prices, is anybody else feeling less and less inclined to keep giving Microsoft your money?

Sometimes the truth hurts

If you're the guy who sweats constantly with Cheeze Doodle dust on your fingers wearing a Metallica or Winger T Shirt then Kinect is not for you

It's not an insult, it's not a slight, it's the truth

If you choose to align yourself with that demographic so be it

I don't see any problem with it. I expected something better, I thought maybe it was MS people laughing at and making fun of a fat guy who was trying to play Kinect. In which case, I would want to give MS even more money.

I apparently can't adequately express all the things that are wrong with what you said without being moderated for it, but I want you to reread what you've written here and sit for a while in a quiet setting and reflect on it. I think you'll emerge a better person.

Meh, I mean really, what do you expect from Microsoft? They're like politicians in that they'll say whatever will appeal to the crowd they're standing in front of at the moment.

First I see nothing wrong with what Jaysonguy wrote. Second, the inability to express yourself in words without swearing is a sign of a weak vocabulary and emphasizing that shouldn't be the start of your argument.

1. I didn't swear.

2. the problem is that Microsoft used a stereotype of gamers that was insulting to gain the approval of a non-gamer audience. I'm not a fat sweaty cheese guy. In fact, I'm in great shape and I have a good job where I make a decent salary based on what I went to school for. But I am a gamer. And that's who's been insulted here. I don't understand why that's a difficult concept to grasp. If a stereotype of a group that you belong to doesn't insult you, that's great for you. But don't go on to then tell other people who are insulted by that stereotype that they're somehow deserving of it. That's not very great.

I'm totally gonna get back at them by not buying Kinect.

Wait, I wasn't gonna buy it in the first place.

I can see where people would get insulted about the crowd they're catering to with the Kinect, but not with the XBL prices. 10 bucks a month is pretty fair.

\Microsoft used a stereotype of gamers

JonSnow777

Microsoft didn't use a stereotype of gamers, they used a stereotype of a very particular gamer, one that minimal effort makes them sweat

Now that means that Kinect will not be for them

The idea that you used the words "Makes us into a joke" means that you identify with the special select number of gamers

Also did you ever hear of a freaking joke before? I mean the Simpsons have been using comic book guy for decades now and I don't remember too many boycotts because of it and I'm almost positive you've never posted about that "indignity"

No, they used a stereotype of gamers. And I have heard of a joke. Hey, you're fat and you smell bad. That's a joke so you can't be offended.

You wrote that you couldn't adequately express what was wrong with what Jason had said without getting moderated. Swearing would be one logical reason to be moderated, if you weren't going to do that were you just going to insult him throughout your post, were you going to post naked pictures of gamers that are in good shape as an argument?

It really is most remarkable, just when I thought my opinion of you couldn't get any lower, you weigh in on a thread like this and I realize I haven't yet plumbed the depths of my own estimation. The point here, Jayson, is that this person is insinuating that anyone who doesn't buy kinect is a smelly, overweight, unemployed basement dweller. Do you see now?

No, I was just going to say that he's overacting the whole "I'm not offended because I'm not a fat sweaty gamer!" thing because he was compensating for the fact that he is actually a fat and sweaty gamer, which would have been a tongue in cheek twist on him saying that those of us who are offended are only offended because we're fat sweaty gamers. But I probably would have been more insulting about it, because I tend to disregard people's feelings sometimes on the internet.

Saying that all gamers are fat, basement dwelling nerds devoid of any social life is like saying that all black people are good at sports. Its simply a broad generalization and bad stereotype. I think MS should learn from Nintendo that "catering to casuals" is a bad way to keep your gaming core.

Unfortunately, I've invested too much into my 360 to switch sides this late in the generation, but if I had the cash, I probably would switch to the Sony camp.

To say that there isn't a difference between hardcore gamers and casual gamers is an insult to the gaming community just as much as what they said it. It's unfortunate that MS is marketing this great new thing to a very small part of their consumer base, but I think it's also very perceptive of them to realize that Kinect is NOT in any way going to satisfy the hardcore gaming community. Was what they said a little offensive? Yeah... it was. But also, that was one guy who I guarantee got chewed out once his comments were made public. If this is really going to change your opinion of MS, then you were probably already on the fence about whether or not you hate or loved them anyways.

I really wasn't offended by what they had to say... what's there to get mad about? That they generalized that people like us are, for the most part, over weight and sweat a lot? Or that they used that stereotype as a selling point for the Kinect?

Agreed. I can imagine a morbidly obese dude chewing on combos, pies and all sorts of high octane crap while fitting their wrist braces for a marathon gaming session. "they're raising XBL prices by 10 dollars a year?!?! When I'm done boosting my MW2 score, Microsoft will hear of this travesty!!! Where is my protest cape?" Those guys exist by the thousand............

Aahh lets not act like we didn't see this coming, M. Pachter was predicting a price raise a long time ago, he even mentioned Platinum Subscription being around $100-120 if introduced in the future, if MS does that, let us be prepared. If you compare Xbox live now to the Xbox Live service from the original xbox, the value has increased a lot, its not even comparable, but yet we were paying the same. It will never be free, I hope people will see that this will not change for the "better".

Once you graduate get (better) job or a raise at work, affording this won't be a problem.

Everyone talks about everything we are getting for our money on Live, and I am still trying to figure out what that is. Netflix, Facebook, and Last FM are nothing more than Apps, just like you get on a smartphone. We already pay netflix a monthly fee, and that can be streamed to your T.V. for free via blueray and DVD players, PS3, and even the Wii. Facebook is free on the other consoles, why would we pay for it. The games we play are not on dedicated servers that MS is running, they are peer to peer. ESPN 3? A good chunk of your cable bill is going toards ESPN, which don't forget is also owned by disney, which also owns ABC, so what am I getting there that I don't already have?

The best part of it is that we don't even have an internet browser on 360. HMMMMMMMMM, I wonder, if they gave us an internet browser, then we wouldn't need all of their apps, which seems to be why we are paying a fee to them for Xbox live.

Awesome, so all someone needs is a smartphone, BluRay, DVD, another console, and a cable box or they can pay Microsoft 40-80 cents a month

Oh yeah, there's no holes whatsoever in your argument

I think most of the people that read that really missed what Microsoft is trying to do. They aren't calling us 30 something sweaty whatevers. If you read that and go "hey that's me!", then that's your problem. Microsoft is trying to sell people on Kinect. And who are they trying to sell Kinect to? NON-gamers. Gamers already knew if they were or weren't going to get Kinect the minute they heard about it. They are using the stereotype that many Non-gamers have towards gamers as a selling point for their new product. I can't believe people are taking this personally.

A lot of the time when I read articles in magazines or on gaming sites about events like E3, the person writing the article will mention the smell of body odour that fills the event. It sounds like lots of gamers either don't wash and/or don't use deodorant/anti-perspirant. IMO, someone who doesn't take care of their personal hygiene, is a lazy person.

Awesome, so all someone needs is a smartphone, BluRay, DVD, another console, and a cable box or they can pay Microsoft 40-80 cents a month

Oh yeah, there's no holes whatsoever in your argument

Your getting the point now Jayson, most people already have at least one of the things mentioned, and that allows access to them for free. Theres a little hole in your arguement also. Did you take your math class at the same school you learned about economics? 40-80 cents a month? Show me where I can get live for $4.80 per year.

The increase, which is the point here in question, is $10. You take 80 cents x 12 months is about $10. And Since most people don't pay pull price for xbox live you get around 60-80 cents per months increase.

Good. The farther away Kinect is from the nerdy games I like, the better.

It's just a stereotype. Anyone who takes offense to it is just being oversensitive. Besides, that one guy at E3's Sony press conference made a bunch of stereotypical remarks about gamers himself, no one said anything about that. In fact, the audience was laughing a good deal. And about the raise in XBL, I was upset about it at first, but if you break it down monthly, you're not even paying a dollar a month more for it.

its kind of like the friend that acts differently toward you when with a different group of people, it was like MS was trying to impress all the cool kids by making fun of the nerds when they are probably a littl nerdy themselves. I dont fit the stereotype they put forward at all, but it was quite petty of them to throw that insult in there

As much as I hate saying this, that was funny. I kinda don't care what they say, even too my face, that won't make me from stop playing gaming on Xbox 360, and from making the Xbox 360 my favorite console (It still is). Gosh, people take things way to serious these days. Sorry if that was offending, that was my opinion.

yeh but that was at E3, its a very different audience to whom the MS rep was just speaking to
