Summary:
A new consumer report alleges that Microsoft is merely sending new faulty Xbox 360 machines as warranty replacements instead of fixing the "Red Ring of Death" error that renders the console useless.

Full Text:
Gear Live editor Andru Edwards states that his replacement Xbox 360 failed after only 20 minutes of use. Prior to that, he waited three weeks after sending in his first Xbox 360 due to the "Red Ring of Death" error. The replacement unit had been manufactured on Aug. 15, 2007 according Edwards.

"I had to manually turn off the [second] Xbox 360 because it wouldn't even respond to the guide button. I turned it back on, and after 20 minutes was presented with yet another Three Red Ring Circus," he writes.

My brother is on his third Xbox 360 now and has had 3 different serial numbers to date. This recent one, when he got it and turned it on, presented him with one red light immediately. He called MS and spoke to a supervisor and they are sending him a brand new Xbox 360 and Fed-Ex'ing him a box to send the other crappy one back. If this one hadn't worked I think he was just going to dump it and buy a PS3, and I don't blame him at all. Sending refurbished pieces of crap is unacceptable from a company of MS's stature.

hmmm level 1 posts 8. lets see how this works out. did you notice source:gear live? did you by anychange check out the site? it is an amature fansite type thing. hardly credible. he made wild claims thinking it would drive traffic to his site and the adds ARE basicly the content of the site. nor does the story aprear on the live gear website. why? it's as credible as useing a post on the ps3 board as proof. actually less credible. atleast they'll google something ken said as proof. this guys proof is "trust me" even tho he refuses to place the claim on his own buggy, ad infested site.

and it's people like you that make lair flopping so enjoyable.

What do you think he is trolling? Its a known fact that MS sends back refurbished garbage. It happened to me, and its happened to MANY other people. And what the hell does Lair have to do with this topic at hand. Pretty pathetic for you to suspect him of something that is irrelevent to the topic.

They just sent me a replacement. It took about 11 days to get back, so I was happy. It is a different unit. It has a diffierent serial# and manufacture date is 8/15/07.Is the problem fixed now? Should I worry about having the same problem with this unit? If this one breaks, I will raise a lot ofhell with MS. I gave them a chance to correct the problem, but if they don't care and are still sending out defective units, then they don't deserve to be in the console business.

Anectdotal evidence: My first 360 was repaired, same unit returned, 3-rings of death 24 hours later. Received replacement unit, manufactured April of 2006. Lasted 6 weeks, then 3-red rings.

When I called to send it back, MS said I did not have an extended warranty and said that i would have to pay the $140. I had to fax them my bank statement and show them where they had charged me for an extended warranty. They returned a unit manufactured in October of 2006. Despite repeated calls demanding they send me a hard copy of the extended warranty, andpromisesfromthemtodoso, itneverarrived. My calls asking whether or not my Extended Warranty could be transferred if I bought an Elite also went unanswered.

When the Elite was released, I bought one and bought the in-store insurance. I've given up on MS Customer Support. The formation of the so-called Escalation Team did nothelpinmysituation.

Again, totally anectdotal. I still recommend to my friends who ask to buy a 360, but I also insist that they buy the in-store warranty.
