Microsoft announced they will be ending online capabilities of original xbox consoles and xbox emulated games on the 360 on April 15th. We'll I know I'll be playing some of the originals now before they pull the plug. It's kind of sad to see all the old games go, I joined Xbox live when it was originally launched. Even if you play originals on your 360 they will no longer be online.

Do any of you guys still play original xbox games online? if so which ones? I will be playing some Halo 2 for sure in the next weeks.

I'll have Halo 2 marathon in April. I missed out on the game. I didn't get live till 2007 and everyone was just playing Gears on my friends list back then until Halo 3 and CoD4 came out. So I've only played Halo 2 every now and again. So before Halo 2 loses Live support I wanna really play it and see what it was all about. It's kinda sad since it's was a vital piece of xbox live history. I wouldn't if Microsoft made a Halo collection like was Sony did with God of War. Put the games in HD, give em achievements and Live multiplayer. I'd be fine with the Halo 2 servers going down if they made a Halo collection.

I like ur HD idea. Repackage the games, include all the maps in one server for a massive online. Id play that instead of constantly spawn killed in Halo 3. If they did this before Reach, they would definetly make money. I just want to be able to have a wide variety of maps instead of a set of 10-15. Nothing was wrong with the old maps, i liked them and so did everyone, thats why Halo:CE and Halo 2 did very well. This seems like a great idea for a Halo 360 collection.

I never felt like playing them anyways...I never even used XBOX LIVE/PSN/DREAMCAST etc. online last gen, I played all my games offline, so I have no games that I would want to play online. Bad news for the Halo 2 junkies I guess.

Don't blame them, you eventually have to move on. I hate it when people think we're suppose to always be stuck in the past because they can't move on. I think dropping Xbox 1 support and online will help push Xbox LIVE even further. Xbox LIVE has been doing nothing but making advancements and leading the way in online with gaming consoles. This will do nothing but stimulate the reinventing of Xbox LIVE even more.

Every once in a while, I would pop in Crimson Skies, Unreal Championship 2, Star Wars Battlefront 2, and my personal fave, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory.

In all honesty, it was rare that I played them. But when I did, they were still excellent online experiences. Any gripes I have about this all are all based on nostalgia. Realistically, there's plenty of 360 games to play online.

The main reason i think is because deep down microsoft want those original xbox gamers to switch over to the 360 so they can stay ahead of Sony since they're catching up. And now no more Halo 2? Halo 2 is so much better than halo 3 online. Man microsoft annoy me even more. i mean i like the Xbox 360 i just hate Microsoft, they're a cheap manipulating company. I dont care if anyone replies to this saying otherwise, because it's true.

It's not bias if it's the truth. My brain just about had an aneurysm last time I played, and had this **** try to tell me that Halo was the first FPS on consoles that was any good. It made me wish I could strange someone over TCP/IP.

RIP original Xbox. I haven't played any original Xbox games online since Halo 3 came out, so I'll be able to bear.

Because consoles are mainly closed networks, I knew this was going to happen eventually (heck I'm surprised it lasted this long). Hopefully the current system will be able to benefit. Although I hope that current and newer games are optimized for future xboxs so they don't have to do this again.

That's a little bias. I'm sure not all of them are 12 year olds. Who knows, maybe those 12 year olds have rich parents.

I think all the 12 year olds moved on to newer games.

Well I don't know about that. I've come across kids in all the popular shooting games. I wouldn't single out Halo.

I said this in another forum, but it seems to apply and offers some more information.:P

LINK.

No more Online 360 Xbox Original games, no more Halo 2 Online, and no more Xbox 1 Online play after APRIL 15, 2010.

This sucks for me, I have 2 XBOX's (Halo). Does this mean out 360's are going to get the same treatment in the future, years from now when the 720 is out?

Will one day, our 360's be obsolete with regards to online? I have quite a few XBLA games I need to log in to play, this doesn't bode well for the millions of gamers like me.

I guess play your Halo 2 Online guys, it's going, going....gone. I still play Splinter Cell, Steel Battalion, Halo 2, Crimson Skies, and Phantom Dust all for XBOX as well from time to time...

Think about this, one of THE GREATEST ONLINE CONSOLE GAMES EVER!, Halo 2, will no longer be online on Xbox's around the world.:(

I guess there is a disadvantage to a closed network.:(

-----------

Microsoft has announced it will "discontinue" Xbox Live for the original Xbox and its games on April 15, including Xbox Originals and Xbox games playable on Xbox 360. Xbox Live launched in North America on November 15, 2002--the first anniversary of the Xbox's launch--requiring a $50 'Xbox Live Starter Kit' which packed a one-year subscription, a headset and demos for Whacked! and MotoGP

While the Xbox was not the first console to support online play, Xbox Live certainly revolutionised it. At launch it packed a unified 'gamertag' user account with friends lists, matchmaking, voice communication and downloadable content. Xbox Live Arcade brought downloadable games and demos in November 2004, then run from a disc.

"As we look down the road, we'll continue to evolve the service with features and experiences that harness the full power of Xbox 360," said Xbox Live general manager Marc Whitten. "To reach our aspiration, we need to make changes to the service that are incompatible with our original Xbox v1 games."

Backwards-compatibility is reportedly why friend lists are limited to 100 people, while the same source says the enduring popularity of Bungie's shooter Halo 2 was a large motivating factor behind Microsoft's decision not to discontinue Xbox Live sooner.

"'Halo 2' has had an amazing run on LIVE, with a dedicated community more than five years after launch and well into the next generation of consoles," says Whitten's letter.

Whitten ends on a chipper note, promising "We'll share more details soon, but in the meantime I want to assure you that the best is yet to come for Xbox LIVE."

Nope, you're wrong

Halo 2 does not have the players that it's modern counterparts do

As for the rest you're just throwing out accusations hoping that one of them stick

Most of the way the structure is for Live is because it's been carrying a console that's been dead for the last half of this decade

As we've seen Microsoft wants to continually evolve the platform when it comes to it's online interactions and that's impossible to do when you have to also factor in supporting archaic hardware every step of the way.

Original XBOX'ers have had their time to upgrade and Microsoft has bent over backwards to be the only company to support their hardware so completely.

It's time to move on, all that it's doing now is holding back the company

I'm worried that a shutdown will also happen to the 360. Without LIVE, most of my games are useless for me. Halo 3, L4D2, and MW2 are some examples. I know they have single player campaign, but I'm not a big fan of those. I love playing online and playing with other actual people

No, not at all

You understand that the Live service is determined by what the original XBOX can handle right?

If you take that console out of the loop you can greatly expand the service for everyone

By the time Xbox LIVE support gets cut off for the 360 (which is many many years from now) you'll be playing way more advanced games that everyone else is playing. And I'm sure there will be a Halo 5, L4D 10 and COD 15 by then.

The brat in question was one of those that basically wouldn't acknowledge anything before Xbox and PS2... or in other words, a standard Gamestop store. The kind of person that can't acknowledge a game beyond high detail graphics and stuff like that. Trust me when I say, we don't need more of those morons being allowed to breed, much less pollute the community pool as much as they have already.

I think you misread the post. They're not canceling the Xbox Originals feature on the marketplace. They're canceling all Xbox Live capability for Xbox 1 games. That means you may no longer play Halo 2 online at all,or anything else for that matter. Anyways, kind of makes me sad.All those memories and good times in Halo 2...I guess I'll have to have a marathon sometime before April 15th.

I'm just wondering what improvements would be made to Live. Maybe a web browser? Doubt it. Better servers for the existing 360 games. Doubt this too. A price break. (ha ha, just joking, M$ rather eat filet minion in front some homeless Hatians, while they ask for change for a $100 bill) More room for adds and other pointless features which dont add to the gaming experience. (betting on this one) I'm not seeing a benefit, only forcing those with an original Xbox to upgrade... M$ might prove me wrong. (doubt it)
