NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Microsoft Corp. announced plans Monday to launch a 512MB Memory Unit for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system and an increase in the official size limit of Xbox LIVE(R) Arcade games from 50 MB to 150 MB.

The 512MB Memory Unit, available worldwide beginning April 3, will retail for an estimated $49.99 in North America.

The 512MB Memory Unit will be pre-loaded with the Xbox LIVE Arcade game "Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved" from developer Bizarre Creations Ltd. for a limited time. The original 64MB Memory Unit will simultaneously drop in price from $39.99 to $29.99.

The rumor I have heard is that the reason for no new HD is this:

MS is going to allow users to move / copy all non-game data (i.e. Trailers, Demos, etc.) over to any networked PC running XP, MCE or Vista.

Seems the market research thinks that virtually everyone who has XBL also has a home PC so they are going to take advantage of it.

The (May?) update will also allow the same non-game data to be saved to an external USB hard drive.

Good to hear they increased the XBLA size to 150. Now maybe our games won't be handed to us in pieces.

Finally!.  I have been waiting a while for the new memory unit so I could make back ups of all my game data, and be able to take my profile to my friends house.  Too bad I already have Geo Wars.

Btw, one poster said that an upcomming update would allow us to copy game data to USB drives.  Is there a link to that story, because this is the first I've heard about it.

This is GREAT news as about 60-70% of the XBLA games are crap.  This will finally make the games worth their price tag.  Good move Microsoft.
