From GameSpot

"While Microsoft's Xbox 360 Spring Update will integrate Windows Live
Messenger into the system's dashboard for cross-platform chatting, the
machine's text-window interface for standard control pads makes lengthy
conversations a chore.

To ease the task of typing in messages without the aid of a
full-sized keyboard, Microsoft today announced a new text input device
for the Xbox 360 controller. The attachment snaps onto the bottom of
the controller through the headset jack and features a QWERTY key
layout with 47 keys.

The keyboard attachment has not been priced or even named yet, but it
is expected to see release this summer."

It would be interesting if I used my Xbox 360 on a television, but it's at my computer desk and I already have a USB keyboard hooked up to my Xbox 360. I just had it laying around.

I'm assuming not. Before launch, Microsoft explained that keyboards would never be used for gaming and it would be locked off from the firmware. Final Fantasy XI uses it, but it also installs a bunch of crap on the hard drive, which is pretty conspicuous.

Right, they pretty much did this for the Messenger service. If they ever plan on making these for MMOs and such, they better make a real keyboard for that.

Right. This news announcement was supposed to coincide with that leaked Spring Update video. The purpose of this add-on is to allow you to message your MSN contacts through your Xbox 360.

Edit: Got to it first lobobizarro :P

The coolest thing that microsoft could do now is to sell a new controller with a track ball to use as a mouse instead the the right analog stick and with the 120 GB HDD, allow us to install PC games on our 360.  That would be so Freeking cool.

Sadly, I guess it will stay a dream.

I've been a big supporter of that idea for years now. I wonder why no one has jumped at this aside from a few third-party peripheral developers.

I'd assume the keyboard is like the one on Sidekick cell phones, and experienced users are pretty fast with that.

If its an attachment then I fail to see where it laps over the the regular controller. looks like the keyboard controller is diving into the controller which makes it look like its one piece. I hope it isnt to expensive $$$

My point is this! If it was or is going to be an attachment then what pic are they postig on the site cause thats one piece. If it wasnt one piece then it would flow over the top of the controller for it would need to use the controller to keep it attached. One little headphone prong is not going to keep it on there. It would fall off on weight alone. Plus! Look at the inner sides of the controller. Thats one piece.

i don't want to get into a debate over a controller. or anymore than i already am lol but i'm just saying that they say it's a attachment. no matter what you see. it's listed as an attachment, not a whole new controller.

Look at the sides of the controller on the pics I posted. It obviously longer than normal. Comparied to the regualar one, it doesnt flow right to be an attachment.( Sorry! Its the coffee thats making ramble on about this )

I can see very easily where it overlaps the controller..  It does flow over the top of the controller, that's why the inner sides of the controller look thinner.

How can you not see that?

The two pics you posted are at different angles, for one, hence the 'longer' illusion... and for two, the first pic of the controller on it's own is CGI that was released prior to the system, back in 05.

??? The keyboard one has a shadow all around where it touches the controller. You can basically see a lip all around were the keyboard is touching. That shadow or lip wouldnt be there if it went over the top of it. Im done arguing with this. Attachment or not I think Ill just stay with my usb keyboard. Also, the story was pulled off the site so we will not know today exactly what the details are until they are official. You guys can rub it in my face later when it is.

They need to package a mouse & keyboard with Command and Conquer when it releases.  I believe that Microsoft needs to suppourt mouse and keyboards so that we can finally see good RTS games on a console, the mouse and keyboard would also be really usefull for FPS games.

That shadow is on the controller because the keyboard overlaps it.  Overlaps, not blends in perfectly.  If it were one piece there wouldn't be a shadow at all.

Seconded. I still play Generals on my PC and even that has not enough micromanagement keys. It only allows you to micromange up to 10 teams which isn't enough for strategic play. It will be totally unplayable strategically on the X360 without micromanagement. And I don't see how they can integrate accessible micromangement that goes just as fast as pressing one button with the X360 controller. It's not possible.
