Last time I called Xbox Live support they recommended at least 2 Mbps for a solid On-line play.

I would have to agree since I have tried Xbox Live with a 512k connection and have experienced a lot more lag than I like. :)

I don't know if they give a specific spec. They just say broadband which is generally anything over a 56k connection. I took the liberty of going to there site and getting the link for the connections allowed.

I use DSL 1.5mb down and 512kb up, and I have no lag so far over the past almost 2 years on Live while online gaming.

I used to have DSL that maxed out at like 40kb/s and I could run XBL fine with no problems. I don't think they even sell DSL that slow anymore so as long as you have broadband internet, you're probably using something that's fast enough.

As long as you don't have Satellite or dial-up, you should be fine. Just make sure your ping is around 200 or less.

How can you determine your speed via Xbox Live? I'm lagging on every game I play though I didn't before. Unfortunately, wifi for me is the only option because my router is in the basement.

Commonly for PC games and such your optimal is 5Mb/s but you could probably survive on 256. The problem would be that if you're host, you're gonna have a wicked connection (Obviously) and everyone's gonna be lagging around.

Just try it. If it lags, it's not like Microsoft is gonna ban you or anything.
