FFXI is a grind start to finish. When you die you don't lose your stuff. You just lose exp. And once you get high enough to party, mages get a raise spell at 25 and later in the rames raise 2 and 3. Which all helps to negate xp loss.
I haven't played it in a very long time and i've spent almost 3 years in the world. From what I hear it's rather hard for new players to start out right now as most everyone that is lvling new characters are just using an alt and has people helping them.

A point which can be a + or - depending how you take it; it force team play, you can almost do nothing alone. I love that fact because it puts it aside from other and create link with people more than any other. But many people just hate not being able to solo/duo
I've tried many MMO and always go back to this one so far. But if like you said you are more into shooters and not fantasy, just forget it.
Huxley will be an MMO for the 360. Actually an MMOFPSRPG. A Massive Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter Role Playing Game. And surprise, there will be a monthly fee attached to it on top of what you pay for Live. So it is said.
FFXI is single when you start but once your higher lvls all you really can do to lvl up is grouping otherwise its pretty hard after the first lvls, don't recommend if not the social or new to the series type
