Depending on your position on the matter, that's either hilarious, sad or just extremely dumb.

My money is on the third option.

It's the last 2 imo. How do you spend $1700 (US) in a few months. And not notice how you are magically able to buy things?

lol i know right! So i guess in all the $1,700 dollars worth of points he bought, he never noticed that each quantity of Microsoft points has a dollar amount of currency next to it. He seems old enough to understand that.

Big dummy. The kid looks like he knows what he's doing. (Abusing his mom's credit card.) However, the mom sounds completely clueless on what she agreed to when she entered her credit card #.

What I don't understand is it says the money was spent over a period of several months. Why didn't the mother put a stop to it after the first month? Sounds like the kid isn't the only one too stupid to be in control of a credit card.

Come on, that kid knew what he was doing when he was buying all that XBL stuff. If you don't have enough points on your account to buy something you have to add points. You have to confirm that you are purchasing points for a certain price to add to your account. You see the dollar amount. They aren't just presented as arbitrary Microsoft Points. You know that you're spending $10 on 800 points, which is usually the amount I'll purchase at a time. You are also shown the last four digits of the credit card on the confirmation screen and asked if that's the card you want to put it on. This kid spent $1700? That's 136,000 MS points. They're trying to say that all this time, he didn't know he was spending that money? You can only purchase points at the most, 6000 points at a time, which is $75. He'd have to purchase that large amount 22 times to equal 132,000 MS points. He had to have been purchasing points at smaller chunks in which case the number of times he would have added points would have been much greater than 23. Could have been in the hundreds, the number of times he added points. I think after 3 times adding points, even the dumbest kid would realize that he was doing. And what the hell was he spending that all on? That's a lot of downloading. Where did he have the space to save all that content? Was he renting movies too? I think it's funny that he bought the hot ring girl theme from Fight Night 3. If a prepubescent little boy downloads something like that, he knows that he's spending money on points.

wow that picture is classic but she's way off base i mean she is accusing MS of taking advantage of vulnerable people which is wrong. They really cant make it anymore clear and there are a ton of ways she could have prevented this. One of course being the parental controls. Second she's way to loose with her CC. When i use my CC for anything especially online things im cautious of what happens with the information. Third she needs to learn how to check freaking bills. In the story it says it took several months wth was she doing. She just need to pay more attention to what her kid is doing in general.

people need to be responsible for thier own ignorance. It sounds to me like she was trying to buy a toy to keep son distracted like so many do and got in over her head when she realised it was so much more. I do hope she can get this resolved tough it would be a shame to have to pay for that. I wonder if she even punished the kid in any way? lol i know that if that were my parents id be a dead man.

@Gen007 - But I don't even think MS should be responsible to reimburse her for any of that. Like you said, she had months to monitor her CC bills. And if money was so tight with her family, she would have been on top of this way before it got out of hand. Just because people make dumb mistakes doesn't mean that they can just get out of jail free. She has to take responsibility as a parent.

I definitely agree with everyone in that the kid knew what he was doing and that the money should not be reimbursed. It's extremely unfortunate for the family, but they will have to suffer the ignorance and irresponsibility of the child.

However, I do think this shows the ease that XBox live can be accused. I know when my parents entered their CC information for my first year of Live, it stored their information for me. Then anytime I wanted to get points for DLC or whatever, that credit card was still on there, and I could have chosen it. I was more responsible than this kid and didn't, but if I didn't care or if say I had been mad at my parents, I defintely could have racked up some hefty charges. I think it would be a GREAT idea if Microsoft forced you the enter the 3 digit security code on the back of your CC before being able to make any purchases. It does offer the convenience of not having to enter your CC info every time, but still allows security in that you must have access to the card itself to be able to benefit.

Good, buy a console for your kid so you can get him of your back while you forget your responibilities as a parent. You never bother to read the manual (learn what parental control is) and then blame Microsoft for giving too many responsibilities to your manipulative son, instead of blaming yourself for being too stupid to put restrictions o your kid and/or take care of your credit card details. I bet she is one of those people that say "Sure, buy whatever you want. Splatterhouse? Whatever, put it i the cart" and then complain about the violence in videogames. That is really sad, and I really hope MS just ignores them.

Her kid ripped her off. She wasn't paying close enough(any?) attention to her credit card statements over the last several months(probably until she tried to use it and it declined). She then tries to blame the company because- what? They make it too easy to charge money on a credit card? In my opinion, this is a direct result of parents not beating their children. When I was a kid, if such a state of affairs had ever been conceivable, I wouldn't DARE charge a dime on my dad's CC, because I knew for a fact he would whoop my ass! IF Microsoft decided to throw this woman a bone, they would need some way to ensure that the boy no longer has access to what he downloaded. Perma ban the profile from xbox live. Maybe they could strip the licenses, or something. Send some kinda pulse down the wire to brick his console. Okay, maybe the last one is scifi conspiracy theory crap, but you get the point. In any case, any of the above solutions would be more than fair, but after she started pointing her finger, any chance of them scrubbing the debt went from slim to none.

@EzekyleAbadon - This kid looks like one of those D-bag kids that gets in trouble all the time and picks on other kids and the mom is one of those moms that always says, "No, not my little Johnny. He's such a good boy. He would never do that." The son, as you said, completely manipulative over his mom. You know what this is? This is Eric Cartman and his mom.

This. I wouldn't refund them crap. That kid knew exactly what he was doing unless he's a retard which he might actually be by looking at his face. If he is... hmmm. I don't know. I'd take off the first month of charges, keep the rest and blame the mom for not checking her account or billing statements at all.

On the one hand that kid looks old enough to have known what he was doing. This story was also from the Daily Mail and with that paper you may as well be reading The Onion.
That said, I do feel sorry for the mum. I'm not entirely sure how that much money could go unnoticed - my sister and my mum have both been the victims of credit card fraud so I know to check my statement twice when I receive it - but it's possibe he racked up the £1000 before she even got her statement. I can also see how a mum wouldn't know her card information was stored. A lot of parents don't know how to use an Xbox either and probably wouldn't know it even had parental controls, let alone how to use them.

If that was my kid and Microsoft didn't back down, I'd sell the Xbox and make him pay back the rest of the money.

going to agree with this. and even with said revenge i know i would get my butt beat or the famous fear of God thrown into me. seriously parents dont exert that fear into their kids anymore. thankfully while my sister may be TOO strict her kids at least have a healthy understanding if you dare cross mommy you are one dead person when you get home. and theres nothing wrong with that they love her the parents love the kids but its understood you derespect me or act like an idiot your getting the fear of God put into your soul something sadly most kids from 1995 on seem to lack because forbid we offend our little children OH NOZ THE HORRORS. heck look at animals in the wild babies of animals in the wild know full well mommy is the boss and crossing mommy = pain its natural and humans are animals after all... and i sadly disagree i think microsoft might cave in on this one but i hope they dont and i hope they make them pay it all back and charge interest. and i hope he gets permabanned too. the kid is dumb the mother is dumber lets make them pay for being dumb its high time society stops rewarding stupidity.

I think theyshould or probably willmake a deal where they send the Xbox in at the families expense, Microsoft deletes the hardrive, and sends it back. Then, that console should be locked and not able to get online. The kid knew what he was doing, the mom used it as a babysitter, and didn't keep on top of her credit card bill. Regardless it is their fault, but I doubt that Microsoft wants that kind of public attention by making the mom pay it all with no help once so ever.

I love how the mom tries to take no responsibility for her kids actions. You get a freakin credit card bill every month, the first few charges should have been a sign. Not to mention the parental controls she could put on the console. She was neglegent(sp?) and now she doesn't want to deal with the consequences.

"When he is in gaming mode he can't be thinking about the money." She said that. Yeah, time to pay up jerks. Extra content doesn't just magically pop up with free games for the kid to cry about it. He did something bad and she doesn't want to discipline him so it's MS's fault. Good argument.

In other news, according to Fox News, BulletStorm can be linked to a need to rape women. For real. Today's just full of great news stories!
