i like skate. its cool. i enjoy the demo.

but.

its touted as being a 'thinking-man's tony hawk,' or that it actually takes more skill. but i kinda think the random button mashing is pretty much equivilant to random joystick-flicking. i played for about 20 minutes, and i just thought i'd see if i could do anything by randomly using the trigger and right thumb stick, and i did a perfect front flip and landed it. I couldn't even do that in tony hawk (i suck at that game).

i like the game, but is the learning curve as hard as advertised?

It's not hardit just takes more practice and skill than Tony Hawk. It's pretty esy to do flip tricks in skate, but try to do a 360 flip to a boadrslide on SKATE and see how easy it is. I found myself trying to nail certain grinds over and over again becasue my timing and alignment was off. That makes it more realistc and challening, yet fun at the same time. Tony Hawk I could Kickflip grind a telephone wire and do the moonwalk while grinding!

I didn't like the controls. Pushing a button to go? Not for me.

You only have to press it 3 times for max speed. It's not like you constantly have to press and press. It actually give you a variation of speeds to perform your trick. Plus it adds more realism to the game because in TOny Hawk he would push ever so often, in real sakting you use for fot alot more than you do in Tony Hawk

What it is trying to do is make skateboarding more "realistic" by adding more complexity and tricks that actually are doable while removing the absurdity of tricks like climbing up a building, jumping from said building, grinding nearby power lines, and then proceeding to plant off a moving helicopter that happens to be flying dangerously low over a densely populated urban area only to fall onto the street without a broken board let alone serious injury. I for one think this has an interesting premise to it. I'm not bashing Tony Hawk or anything, but I can't be the only one who has ever said "Oh come on!" when attempting some crazy stunt.

I liked the demo, though probably not enough to buy the game (not until its cheap at least). I did pull off some cool stuff from just randomly flicking the analog sticks but I think the real challenge comes from lining up several cool stunts off several obstacles instead of one big insane stunt from a big jump off a ramp like Tony Hawk used to be.

The only problem I had, there were a few times I just couldn't figure out why I wiped out. Especially when grinding, I couldn't figure out if I was well balanced or not. And once I landed with my board across a wide ledge at a full stop, where there really was no chance of losing balance, but after a few seconds my guy just sorta flopped off the board.

Were you going slow? I've fallen many times on a slow boardslide.
