I cant go back that far because my memory is horrible, but I thought condemned was a sweet creepy game that no one ever talks about. I just cant think of any old under rated games...
Aladin for genesis can't get enough of that game I hope they release it on xbl arcadejc_tkml
OMG, Aladdin was such a fun game... way better than the SNES version too.
But all in all, I think what we're talking about here are unsung games rather than underrated. Viva Pinata, IMO, is 360's unsung game... but the ratings are more or less accurate. River City Ransom for the NES kindof became a cult hit, but anyone who DID play it holds it in very high regard... unsung.
Unsung: nobody really talks it up, largely forgotten but unjustly so Underrated: everyone says it sucks, but it really doesn't... people don't think it's as good as it is.
For me, its Phantom Dust. I know it got an 8.5, but for me it was just amazing so I would have given it a 9.9 easily. The singleplayer was bland, but fun and could be challenging at times, but the real game was in the multiplayer. I remember going on 7 -12 hour marathons with my friend on Live with this game. It was so good that it knocked Halo 2 out of my Xbox, basically permanently. This game really needs to be BC!!!!!
There are for me lots of underrated games for each system. Thief was great. For nes it was Solstice and Equinox. I also had a lot of fun with Psi-ops. I also remember enjoying The Lost Vikings for snes. Geeze, I can't get it down to one!! I'm sure there are some gems out there that none of us have played. If we find one, there should be a place to list them so we can go back and check out the ones we missed.:D
Although it's a recent game, I'd have to say, The Outfit. Â Everyone overlooked it because graphically it wasn't very impressive. Â But once you get online and the server is running 8 people, plus 32 squadmates, plus tons and tons of AI controlled weaponry it's ridiculously fun.
Thief definitely was a great game, but for me I was following the game until its release. The most underrated I believe was Beyond Good & Evil. That game was really fun even though it seemed like just a kids game, it wasn't.Â

LOL. I still play Solstice every now and then. You can throw in Landstalker for Genesis as well.
