I'm a lifelong Console fan and owner, I've played and owned just about every home console that came on the market beginning with an atari 2600 back in 1984. I don't play games on my pc, for many reasons, one being

1. the constant upgrades you have to make in order to play the game

The biggest reason I don't play games on the pc is the mouse and keyboard.

I heard so many pc gamers speak about how the mouse and keyboard is the best thing since slice bread. I always wondered how would you go about playing a game with the mouse and keyboard. I played games on the pc back in the day, All we had then was maybe pong, tic tac toe and hangman. So being Old skool I feel those are the type of games that should be played on a pc.

Now I don't knock things until I atleast try it. So recently I went and got a game (one of my all time favs) to play on the pc. This game is Halo 1, I have vista and I heard vista has a lot of compatibly issues with some of the older games. So I choose Halo 1 to be safe, hey the company that made the game made the pc OS. So i coldn't go wrong, and I didn't. I finally got the chance to play with a mouse and keyboard with modern gaming. And I didn't like it, the mouse was ok, but i stil perfer a controller. The 360 has the best controller on the market, it fits perfectly into my hand and the weight is nice (on the wireless controller). I felt stupid playing on a keyboard, maybe it's just the old skool in me, but i've always played games with controllers, Arcade and home consoles.

My question to all who have tried and played with both, which do you like, 360 controller or keyboard and mouse.

I say Keyboards are for typing and a mouse is for moving your cursor across the screen. How in the world do you play games like Madden, 2K8 basketball and others using a keyboard??

FPS is my fav genre. Thats why the 360 is the console of choice for top rate fps

I would love to hear your thoughts.

I think that some games might be more enjoyable for some with a controller, it's more relaxed. But the precision of mouse vs keyboard is leagues above that of a game controller. PC gamers who use them can just do incredible things you would not even imagine.

well madden and those type of games would be pretty dumb on pc. pc is mainly for rts and fps. mouse and keyboard are good for fps, your reactions are better with a mouse than with a joystick, but i personally prefer 360. if youve ever tried halo on pc, using a mouse is really cheap, especially with the pistol. it takes the fun out of the videogame, cuz youre not really playing anymore, youre just testing how fast your reactions are and how fast you can click. with a controller youre a little more restricted, but thats the way an fps is meant to be played.

I agree with most of what you said, but I don't think that the precision of a mouse takes the skill out of the game. The game then becomes something a lot more involved than just the quickest reaction. Even if you're an accurate and fast shooter, if you don't play really really smart you just won't do well. I could understand it feeling like it takes the skill out of Halo however, as that was a game developed with the controller in mind.

I'm in the same boat with you. I started playing games on the Atari 2600 and been primarly a console gamer. I've played Outcast and the orignal Wolfienstien on the computer but in the end of the day, I'll take a gamepad over mouse and keyboard any day of the week.

The only reason for choosing k/m is the learning curve... it´s so easy that everyone can get a hang of it withing seconds... heck, my mom uses the setup when she checks her emails, offcourse it´s easy to use the same thing you use every day. Instead of clicking your inbox it fires your gun, easy.

That`s the exact same reason i hate it, pointing with my mouse feels boring and takes me out of the experience, i wan`t to know that when i get a headshot it´s actually an accomplishment(in some games). Aiming in real life isn`t easy u know, u need to practice.

And you actually get to pull a trigger... easy win for the gamepad.

Im a console gamer so I never got into the K/M thing. I still play some Soldier of fortuneII and QuakeIII every now and then on the PC, so I know the precision with the mouse is better. The only game I really played all the way through on PC was Tomb Raider3 (looong time ago:P). I tried some racing games on Pc and I can say It sucks without a racingwheel. so overall the gamepad wins it for me.

It's pretty easy to pick out people who don't play pc games...

Mouse and Keyboard is vastly superior for fps's and rts's. To the people saying there's no skill involved, what a crock. There'smore skill involved. Try playing someone who's amazing with mouse and keyboard and see how well you do. I still play fps's on consoles, but they just feel dumbed down. I know that in real life if I heard a gunshot comming from behind me I could spin around very very fast and have my rifle aiming in the vicinity of the sound. That's what mouse and keyboard gives you. Quick precise movements. That being said, I'm no slouch with a controller either, but it's nowhere near as good for fps's and rts's.

Can't wait till Microsoft allows mouse and keyboard on the 360, which will happen once the PS3 gets UT3 and it's a massive system selling hit msotly because it uses mouse and keyboard...

Mouse and Keyboard is vastly superior in RTS/FPS genre, Halo isn't a good example, try Unreal Tournament 04 , something very fast paced. RTS is obviously better on mk. I also tend to get annoyed when people say "I don't play pc because of m/k"...you can use a controller on your pc, the 360 wired controller works with all GFW games afaik. So ye, whilst gamepad is better for sports/fighting/racing that doesn't mean the console is better for sports/fighting/racing. Edit: Oh, and due to hotkeys, games with lots of powers like rpgs and say bioshock. Whilst 360 owners cycled through their plasmids with bumpers, pc gamers simply hotkeyed their plasmids.

well u can already hook a keyboard and mouse upto ur xbox search for this device

XFPS 360 PRO

it lets u plug in a keyboard and mouse and playstation pad and u can map the buttons to ur keyboard or mouse or pads.

i dnt think either give u a clear advantage, i just think people who think mouse keyboard is better are people who used the mouse and keyboard first loads then went to pad and they havent put in the same hours to master the pad and suss which sensitivity levels are best for them and the game, if ya keep on and get used to it u can still dominate on the pad.

before people blag on saying oh its cheating, i dont use it but wudnt grude anyone who did, as wud ya stil say its cheating when people use a dancemat for a dance game, guitar for guitar hero or a steering wheel for a driving game vs a pad. no its not, they just different controls and xbox shudnt be expempt from all the control choices like pcs arnt.

fact remains just coz ur ona prefered controller dont mean ur cheating or miles better , people can still be poor players on keyboard mouse when its they choice, the fact is these games require a clever player, the controls are what people use but still u have to have the skill to dominate even ona mouse.

everyone has the choice thats way forward , grow up if ya dont like itm coz u have the same options as well

I like both and tend to spread the games I buy out over both formats.

BF2 is my main game on PC - and soon Crysistoo. On the 360, it's theCOD series and Halo3.

Which do I like best? It's hard to say really. The mouse is more natural, quicker and more precise. The joypad is more fun and the games seem more balanced towards that. The learning curve on the pc tends to be more hard-core and less forgiving whilst the 360 has the major advantage of playing whilst lying on my couch :) -which is a big plus.

There's nothing between them really in terms of preformance. The only downside to the joypad is getting shot in the back - it takes an age to turn round. But both are pretty equal once you have plenty of practise. The joypad is the harder of the 2 to master though so more people will prefer the PC I bet.

This discussion has being going on for years...

Depending on which platform you first started playing First Person Shooters will generally dictate your answer. I started playing on a PC and I found it quite hard to revert to a controller. I've always liked the added control you have with a mouse+keyboard, but only because I never thought of playing with a controller until I purchased my console. I would still like nothing more than to have a M+K for my Xbox 360, but the third party products that I've been able to track down and test are nowhere near ready.

The day an official Microsoft K+M adaptor/accessory hits the market, will be the first and only time I'll wait in camp in front of a store to get it.

I started my FPS "career" on the PC. Back in the days of Wolfenstein and Doom I was using only the keyboard. But as the games got more complex I went to the K/M setup (games like Soldier of Fortune, Half Life, etc.). Now, I agree with one of the posters above...the K/M setup isn't better...it is just different.

Playing the Halo games are what really got me into FPS gaming on the consoles, and thus using a console controller. After hours upon hours of playing Halo 2 I've gotten to the point where I prefer using a controller over the K/M. The dual stick setup feels natural now, but I do have the ability to switch back to K/M without missing a beat.

In the end it just comes down to personal preference. But I'd be more than willing to take on a K/M user any day with my 360 controller.

I use the 360 controller on my PC for racing games and games like Tomb Raider, BUT the keyboard and mouse are ten times better than a controller can ever be fps and rts games.......

I dont think I need to explain why the k/m are better on Command and Conquere 3, that is pretty much a no brainer.

One of the main reasons k/m are better is for example jumping. Let's take Halo 3. In order to jump you have to take off your right thumb off of one of the sticks in order to jump. So when you are trying to jump and shoot at the same time constantly. It doesn't work out and aiming is very difficult. Also again to reload or to melee or action button you have to take your right thumb off of the right stick. Another hindrance. Whereas with my mouse I have 7 buttons I can program plus the mouse wheel to cycle through weapons very quickly without taking your hand off any movement controls.

Secondly, Halo 3 won't be a good example for this reason because you are limited to 2 weapons. Such games as Quake 4, FEAR, HL2, etc where you have more than 2 weapons, you can easily change them instantly with the number keys above, where as a console controller you have to cycle through every weapon.

I could go on and on, but nothing can be better than aiming with a mouse. The precision is unbelievable.

I used to think that the controller was the best, until I gave Doom 3 and HL2 a chance, at firstI couldn't stand the k/m, but by the time I beat Doom 3, the controller felt outdated on console games.

The k/m isn't something you can just pick up and use. It takes a lot of time to learn and get used to, but it is worth it.

The 360 controller is the best controller to come out yet. However, I've played a ton of FPS on PC and I have to say that aiming with a mouse is much more accurate. People can argue with me but I gaurentee if you plug a wired 360 controller into your computer and tried playing something like CS source you would get owned.

I disagree, PC gives much more control I have both a 360 and a high end pc. However certain games such as driving i like to play on console however you cant get the precision of a mouse on a controller for shooters. But truthfully I dont really care.

The question is not which is more accurate... If that is the case, the mouse and keyboard is definitely the answer...

But in terms of preference, I prefer the controller. Especially on a console, because it levels the playing field and playing on a desk is boring (at least for me). I usually like to play on my couch in my living room and with a keyboard and a mouse that'd be impossible (or at least look real stupid).

I personally think the PS3 supporting KB and mouse is a bad idea. At least for people like me. KB and mouse will dominate the controller, and people who refuse to use a KB and mouse in the living room will definitely lose out, not because of lack of skill but an uneven playing field.

I chose to play competitive games on consoles now (especially FPSes) because I know my opponent is using the exact same controller and hardware as I am.

Keyboards are horrible for any fast paced game, whereas a mouse is great for most games. If they could somehow put a mouse on a controller, that'd be great, but I have to say that a controller is much easier to use than a keyboard and mouse.

The mouse and keyboard definately offer better control in FPS, but I like my surround sound, big screen HDTV, and couch and coffee table when I'm playing game. Not the best environment for a mouse and keyboard.

As you can see from my sig, I have both a PC and a 360. I think the mouse/keyboard setting is the best for FPSs, RTS, and WRPG games. Everything else is better on the 360 controller.

Nothing beats a good mouse, having that more precise controll rather than a controll stick is unbeatable. I agree that sports games and things like action games are better on consoles, but for FPSs and RTSs, nothing beats a mouse and keyboard, nothing even comes close.

The controller seems to be more adaptable to various types of games than the keyboard and mouse without feeling out of place. I can't imagine playing any modern arcade style, fighting, sports, among other types of games on a keyboard n mouse. Since I play more fps and rts than anything else though, i tend to prefer they keyboard and mouse. For anything else, controller is nice.
