Does anybody like Larry Hryb 'Xbox Lives Major Nelson'? Personally, I can't stand the guy and I'm AMAZED at the fact Microsoft keeps him as their Xbox live poster child, as if he earned it by being the 'Directer of Programming'...and by "programming", I mean podcasts, not c++ and JAVA.

I looked at his interests and here it is, "He enjoys photography, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, fingerpainting, and many other gadgets, and notably in his podcast, hunting for the perfect man"(umm, wat?). I'm unfamiliar with his podcast, but it sounds very homo-sexual, not that there's anything wrong with that. However, there is something wrong with fingerpainting. Does anybody see where I'm coming from? Furthermore, does anybody agree? Like is this a joke? Am I missing something? Did this guy do something really big in the past that I'm unaware of that made him truly deserving of his position? Because I've yet to find something that justifies this guy making extremely corny and virtually uninformative videos(unless I'm looking for instructions on how to 'connect my wireless controller' or the release date of some over-promoted arcade game). Correct me if I'm wrong, but 'Major Nelson' represents nothing that videogaming is to me, at all. In fact, it makes me feel as if Microsoft is extremely out of touch with it's community everytime I see this turd.

He's been the face of Xbox Live for years. He does a fine job giving us information and reporting on new Live features and DLC. What more do you expect from him? It seems like the problem you have with him is that you're a little homo phobic. I know you said, "there's nothing wrong with that" but you seem to still have an issue with that if you feel the need to bring it up. I haven't heard his podcast to comment on that aspect of his life. And really, what does that have to do with anything? Also, I don't quite get what you mean when you say he doesn't represent video gaming. Or that he makes MS seem out of touch with its community. He is the very voice that communicates to the community about all major Xbox Live news. At least he's a real guy with a real position at MS. Not just some actor like Playstation's Kevin Butler.

The only problem I have with him is that he seems to over act everything. Other than that I like him because he seems like a real guy that genuinely is interested in video games. I would rather have that then someone like Olivia Munn who should never EVER be the front of anything video games. I am just happy that they are hiring the entire cast from the show G4TV (Tina Wood and I recently saw Laura Foy in a terrible quality video on the dashboard).

Larry Hryb is not homosexual, someone messed that up on Wikipedia (that's wiki for ya). At Microsoft, he doesn't typically do programming. as his job name implies, he's a "director." He did do some other stuff before, though, which I'm unsure wether or not required coding (his previous jobs were for radio stations of some sorts). His podcast is decent. As for why Microsoft has kept him on, I don't know. Maybe he's doing well at his "directing?"

I had no idea that you guys would focus primarily on my opinion of the title of his podcast. Wow, I should have left that out. I didn't even think Larry Hyrb was gay at all, I just laughed at the title of his podcast. The sole point I was trying to make is a 45 year old white male isn't who I think should be representing the Xbox Live gaming community; someone younger with the charisma of the sentuamessage guys should be. That's all.

Don't attempt to take me out of context. I hate that. It's petty.

No, I'm not being petty by saying that a 45 year old white male isn't the face of online gaming. If you that's your opinion of petty, then my opinion of you is that you're a moron and that you're deliberately finding ways to argue with me. Go be a troll somewhere else.

Nice, so you hurl insults. Whatever man. I think you need to reevaluate what the definition of petty is. I'm not trying argue with you, I'm just pointing out that you're the one judging the guy on these ancillary things that shouldn't matter. It's cool though. Everyone else can see it.

I'm sorry for throwing out a couple of insults, but I just honestly felt as if you were intentionally misunderstanding me to create an argument. I really, truly hate when people do that. Now, I know you just don't agree with me that I feel he's too old and irrelevant to be viewed as someone who I'd want to listen to about online gaming. Simple as that. I want to see someone in there who at least emits a feeling of "I play a lot of video games, I know what I'm talking about" not "Hi, I'm Larry Hyrb. I like to fingerpaint and take naps when I get off work." That's all I have to say and sorry for creating such an uproar amongst you devout 'Major's Minute' fans.

The dude lit himself on fire to promote Splosion Man. Never seen someone from Nintendo or Sony do something like that. If they did, they'd have plenty of fans defending them.

I'd rather have Major Nelson making announcements for Microsoft than another 29-year old hipster desperate to prove his "geek-cred."

The average gamer age is in the 30's. Being in your 40's is not "too old."

The dude lit himself on fire because Microsoft paid him to, not out of the pure insanity of Major Nelson.

Apology accepted. It's not like I'm some Major Nelson fanboy though. That's not why I felt the need to comment. Sorry for the cliche statement, but you just can't judge a book by its cover. If you haven't noticed, there no longer is a "typical gamer" any more. They aren't all 15-25 year old males any more. And I'm not just talking about "casual" gamers. And look at his gamerscore. Almost 50,000. Almost twice as much as mine. You can't say that he doesn't play the games. He knows more about what's going on in the Xbox world than any of us ever would. I'm not a big Call of Duty fan, but I thought that the commercial with Kobe Bryant was great. It was a perfect representation of what the gaming community is like. Men, women, young and old, not to mention racial diversity.

To be fair i'm pretty sure he's paid to play those games no? That might explain his huge gamerscore, he gets them for free. Us average serious gamers have to pay lots of moolah for our games.

Sure. And I'm sure he gets a lot of them early as well. But the point is, he plays the games so that he can be a part of the community. He's not just some talking head. He understands the games, the community, the things we experience online, both good and bad. Geez, I feel like I'm riding his jock more and more here. But the fact that he is a gamer too makes me feel like I can listen to him because he knows what he's talking about. Who cares about how old he is?

Microsoft should hire a screaming 9 year old who doesn't pay for any of his own games or Live subscription to replace Major Nelson. That is, if you are looking for the "typical" gamer.

That said I somewhat agree with the TC. Major Nelson is corny to me, as are those guys with sentuamessage. Ultimately their purpose is to get information across, and they serve that purpose. For those hating on Olivia Munn, I agree with you. However an attractive female talking about games isn't always a bad thing. I think that the girl who does the videos for IGN is excellent. I'd rather have someone like that than Major Nelson telling me about how I can delete games with 0 gamerscore from my profile. I think a big part of the problem is that most of the info he give us is boring. Sure he talks about DLC, but he doesn't say anything about it that can't be found on the interwebs. I could go on about how he is boring and is DEFINITELY not the best choice to appeal to gamers. But ultimately he isn't being used to sell xboxes. If you are watching him you already own one, so its irrelevant.

Men, women, young and old, not to mention racial diversity.

lol, mentioning racial diversity brings me to another point: why is all of xbox lives' spokespeople white? Can't tell me they couldn't squeeze and Asian or a Indian in there with all the new kinect and windows app videos they have. Hell, put them together and give them their own show. A little herald and kumar if you will.

Personally can't stand him or any of his videos on the dashboard, but I love the Kinect Show Girl, Bridget.

The dude lit himself on fire to promote Splosion Man. Never seen someone from Nintendo or Sony do something like that. If they did, they'd have plenty of fans defending them.

TylerLee420

The dude lit himself on fire because Microsoft paid him to, not out of the pure insanity of Major Nelson.

Alright, so you would rather Microsoft replace Larry Hryb with Harold and Kumar and their multiracial gang of hooligans ranging in ages from 12-29? And they must do it free of charge, they don't get paid.

If they light a guy on fire at least once a year, I'm fine with it.

This sounds so stupid I probably would watch it at least once.

It's petty.

TylerLee420

Nobody wants to see some twenty something wanker representing Xbox live. There is a reason that Tony Hawk games and Music Games and snowbarding games and JPRG's all dies a horrible death... because no-one wants to play a Twenty something emo hipsters wankers.

Anyway he seems a fine representative of Xbox... perhaps a more youth oriented platform like the Wii or the See and Say could use some Justin Bieber wanna-be

Interesting thread here. I've read through it all and appreciate the feedback. I don't claim to be the hippest dude in the room. I just want to share up to date and accurate information about Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE for those that are interested. As many of you pointed out, I am indeed a real person not a fictitious personality, that is why I am here replying on this thread.

As for Wikipedia...well .

Any other questions while I am here?

Alright, well here's one:

Please stop hyping upcoming announcements like they are second coming only to have them fall flat on their faces.

I can live with releases that no-one cares about such as Fable Coin Golf et cetera, even with the absence of actual, real exclusives that matter.

What I can't live with is the fact you get our hopes up, only to dash them against the rocks when "Once Upon A Monster" is the stand in for the real games.

2011 is going to be a poor, barren year for the 360 owners who actually care about games. i.e. The gamers who made your employers successful in the console market. They have now turned their backs on us and I'm beginning to wonder; What is the point in owning an Xbox anymore when your direct competitor is offering far many more reasons to own a PS3?

I'm slowly but surely giving up on you and Microsoft.

I suppose I'll be lucky to get a response.

If I got your hopes up sorry about that. That said, I''ve already sent your feedback to a few folks here. It may seem lean right now but I think we'll be just fine. We're not turining our backs on the more hardcore gamers. Not at all.

I met him at CES. He's a nice guy, and swears despite his clean-cut image. But man, if you start asking questions about rumors, that guy just shuts down.

Wow, Larry Hyrb commenting on my thread was honestly the LAST thing I expected. That's seriously too freaking cool and appologies for being so critical.

You have just motivated me to buy like a thousand Xbox games.

Now all I need is the funds to do so...

He doesn't bother me. He seems very interested in games and provides a lot of information. :) I must say though that I do prefer Andy and Dan (SuperKaylo and MrPointyHead) from The Nexus, SentUAMessage and The Insiders, to name a few.
