You are right they shouldv've switched.. However I am pretty sure that a DVD single layer is only 6 gigs. So Blu-Ray would be evn better since it is 15 gigs.gatsbythepigNo. DVD's have 4.7 single and 8.5 dual. Blu-Ray has 25 and 50gb...
i just got on to live and started looking at the game demos and WOW! each demo takes up about 1gb of memory. and since DVD'S have 8gb max storage, then isn't it time to switch to a new, bigger storage like (COUGH) HD DVD? cos no way are games going to get any bigger.0161
There's one huge problem in doing that...the 10 million 360's out there wouldn't be able to play an HD-DVD game so there's no way M$ is going to do this...they'd be shooting themselves in the foot.

you obviously havent read the article about space increasage from last gen and this gen
First, compression gets better and better
Second, dont you see that you will be downloading games soon. Look at how internet speeds are jumping. For example look at the Verizon FIOS, download speed 15mb and upload 2mb and that is for 40 bucks a month. Cable is at 8mb and DSL is at 3mb and moving to 6mb. Say goodbye to dvds, HDDVD, and bluray. I bet they will let you put all your games on the hard disk just hmmmm a PC.
i heard in an article that dvd's are perfect for making 360 games. see since they only have 6-8GB to work with developers have to work on them 10x harder and make sure everything fits and everything is perfect, so there is literally no room for error. sony has blu-ray which has 15GB?? space, so the ps3 developers can screw up so easily by even being a little bit careless.
but if 360 goes HDDVD, i'll be happy with it.Screamin_EaGLes
So if Xbox goes Hd-DVD but sony sticks with blu-ray you are happy that ms games will get worse. What???

There is no reason to do it, the games really don't demand it yet despite what Sony likes to tell everyone.
Yea i remember reading something a little while ago, a developer for a PS3 game said that Blu-ray disc doesnt do much to help games look better or run better, they said "Its just more space"

How, exactly, would the games get worse? We're only talking about storage space here. The only thing BR discs have provided Sony's developers with is the ability to be lazy in regards to compression. Get a clue.

if they can fit oblivion on one dvd, i dont think we need more storage spacelegendofmitch
Exactly what I was going to say.

Compression, compression, compression... Compression is the key and MS is damn good at it. You won't need a next-gen format until after this generation of consoles.
This format war could be fought round and round for quite a while, but what I a pretty mad about is the new d*** elite version of the X360. It really pisses me off that now I have an old machine when I just bought it less than a year ago. I love crackdown, dead rising, saints row, oblivion, and Gears of War but I would have gladly waited if I would have known that M$ was going to screw its past customers over. Now if they gave us the option to return our old X360's and just pay the difference in price I would be willing to do that. I guess I shouldn't be suprised by M$ actions since they have been screwing people over since they began (Apple).
They didn't really screw you over. Your older 360 is not inferior or less powerful the "Elite", except in storage space and HDMI capability. M$ is still using the same 90nm triple-core processors. Sell your old 360 on eBay if you want the Elite. I'm just going to buy a PS3 with HDMI and Blu-Ray since Blu-Ray is going to win the format war anyways.
If the consoles need anything it's more RAM. What good is a 50 gig disc if you can only load half a gig at a time. That is why you won't see the PC version of BF2 reach the consoles because the maps are too big. 64 player maps.
No because that means people have to buy HD DVD drives and also have to buy some HD DVD Burners. If you dont like it go buy a PS3 im sure they have enough storage for a game. Good luck finding a Blu Ray Burner.Wezker619
Sorry, maybe I am missing something here, but what does burners have to do with anything. By the way, it is very easy to find a Blu-ray burner, but they are expensive. I haven't looked into HD-DVD burners but I imagine that they wouldn't be too hard to find either.
Blu-ray was really the way to go. The disks don't get scratches on them. You have to intentionally try to ruin them to scratch em up. I'm not sure if the disk space is really a factor yet. Maybe in 4 years but who knows they prob will have new next-gen systems by then. Data can be compressed so alot can be fit onto a dvd.
