Its not unheard of. Sony made Beta-Max to compete against VHS. VHS became the format of choice so Sony went and started making VHS players. If Blu-Ray is the next format consumer electronics manufacturers will just roll with it. If MS makes a blu-ray player it wouldn't be too far-fetched.

It is safe to say HD-DVD has failed and Blu-ray is going to start booming. If MS switches to blu-ray support it will help sony more, but it can't really hurt MS.... they won't have any other option if they want to support a HD format.

it doesn't mean anything (except for the HD-DVD player purchasers)... I mean, who makes the operating systems that Sony uses on their PCs and laptops? They can use each others technologies, it's better for the consumers.

Why not The format war is not that important from a console perspective, and since MS dont own any part of either format it shoouldnt matter to them who wins.

Regardles as of wether Blu-ray was succesfull for movies, it would still be implemented on future sony consoles, as for games, its the best u can get.

yeah since the HD-DVD is external and only used for watching movies not playing games it would be something MS might do. But I think doing that going for a blu-ray player add on is a bad mistake and would make microsoft look like there making a mistake to what format they first wanted.

i think more people would like a blu-ray player and microsoft did say longago they might have one if blu ray wins.
i would rather have microsoft make the add on, instead of being stubborn and sticking with hd dvd.

I hope so. I would love to use my 360 over my PS3 for Blu-ray usage. I prefer Blu-ray over HD-DVD purely in it's capabilities, however I own both a PS3 and the HD-DVD player for my 360. I'm glad I didn't buy too many movies for the HD-DVD platform, because it will take a miracle for HD-DVD to come out on top of Blu-ray.

was the ps3 version the reason the reason from the delay? I thought that was a rumor. Did rockstar ever confirm what the delay was about? BTW since we're on this topic theres a trailer 4 comming soon for GTA IV.

Its a rumor, Rockstar never confirmed it and I'm pretty sure they denied it at some point. That also wouldn't explain the delay in the 360 version now would it.

The game was delayed cause it wasn't ready to be released. Go back and watch the first trailer, the Frame Rate was terrible and the game had very little polish. So why do you think it was really delayed?

I'm sure microsoft will consider a lot of things if HD DVD fails. Blu-ray would be among the least harmful.

I think microsoft will make both HD-DVD and Blue Ray as add-ons since microsoft is more focused on money. Why not? whats the problem in that??

Microsoft will most definitely stop making HD-DVD playerss after awhile. Expect a drastic price drop soon and the eventual phasing out of the unit. HD-DVD lost the format war its obvious now. So that means the new HD-DVD releases will begin to thin out till everything is Blu-Ray. Why would they continue to push the esternal HD-DVD unit as well as Blu-Ray if they decide to adopt it as an external player?

Toshiba makes HD-DVDs. The drives are toshiba but I'd imagine it was manufactured by Microsoft. THey might not make there own parts but Toshiba isn't pumping out 360 accessories. Microsoft contracts other companies properties to use in their systems the other company only provides the drives. Thats what got the original Xbox in trouble and made the 360's release a year sooner.

Will it affect the game's disc if blu ray is used? I mean do we have to use blu ray disc for 360 games also or it's just for movies?

Microsoft has nothing to do with HD-DVD and Blu-ray. They make the players as an expansion butit's an extra and it has nothing to do with the 360. I didnt understand why they didnt make a player that could play HD-DVD and Blu-ray at the same time from the start.

People who bought the HD-DVD player bought it because they believe HD-DVD was going to win not because they needed to buy it to play 360 games.

Blu-Ray winning was the reason that HD-DVD was not part of the console from the beginning. If it was just an accessory and the format lost no biggie. But a Blu-Ray player add on in very possible as both Sony and Microsoft stand to make a killing off of it. As well as movie format and corporate rivalries don't really affect each other. Sony Pictures has movies on Xbox Live, Sony made competing formats before. Its not sony's game division versus microsoft here. Sony isn't all head up by one entity its broken down into branches. Sony pictures can make a decisision for itself, the electronics division for itself (the branch the use of blu-ray would likely fall under, then there is Sony's game division which sony corporate HQ has even said a few months ago it was bleeding the company as a whole millions.

I have the hd dvd add on for the 360 and do not regret buying it. Some movies on both hd dvd and blu ray have better features on the hd dvd versions from my experience. No regions on hd dvd was a big plus to me. I live in Australia, so getting hd dvd movies from overseas that we do not get here was very easy.

I also recently purchased a pc that plays both blu ray and hd dvd discs. In the end hd dvd or blu ray, it really doesn't matter to me who 'wins'. That I have hd dvds and 'if' blu ray 'wins' then I can still play my hd dvd movies and just buy the blu ray ones from then on, whatever. Also I have found programs that allow me to 'open' my pc to any region of blu ray discs, so now that isn't a problem anymore.

I'm more interested in games, to me the 360 is more than enough and am looking forward to watching hd movies no matter what format it is on. Good on MS for keeping the blu ray option open, as they have said from the start. At least they give 'us' the choice, unlike others!

Incorrect, If/when Blu-ray becomes standard media Sony cant legally stop anyone from using them plus sony own less then half of Blu-Ray (i think) meaning its not their choice, besides why would sony stop them? MS could stop allowing the Vista format on VAIO laptops

No it part Developed

Sony owns the logo, but, like CD and SACD, it was developed with Philips.
Contributing to the development of the format were/are **** Pioneer, Thomson, LG Electronics, Hitachi, Sharp and Samsung.
The current Board of Directors is comprised of:

Apple
Dell
HP
Hitachi
LG
Mitsubishi Electric
Panasonic
Pioneer
Philips
Samsung
Sharp
Sony
Sun Microsystems
TDK
Thomson
Twentieth Century Fox
Walt Disney
Warner Bros.

Sony does not "own" Blu-ray.

Even MS have some part of it as one of the codecs used is MS developed

I have the HD-DVD player for the 360 and I'm bitter as hell. The part that really sucks is that I bought the Harry potter box set thinking that I will get the final two on HD-DVD. I was wrong and I am ****ing steamed. I don't see what makes Blu-ray so friggin superior anyways. Is difference night and day, or is it the same quality? If the picture quality of Blu-ray is better then I can see how studios drop their support for the platform. However, it is good to see that Microsoft is considering the switch to Blu-ray. My question is how will they implement this besides making another drive? Keep in mind this is for the sorry bastards who bought the HD-DVD drive. Here is my idea. There are Hd-dvd/ bluray all in one players right? So why not have some adapter that has all the coding for the Blu-ray format in it and plugging it into a USB port of the hd-dvd player? In theory it sounds great but is it technically possible? I don't know so, that is why I'm asking the people who are more adept at this field. If there is no way that this can happen then well I'm a dreamer I guess. But if is plausible then my idea may work and it a pretty cool idea if I say so myself, but I doubt it will work. And if this Idea does work then Microsoft will be the only system that would support both hd formats in one drive.

THough this entire discussion had nothing in the the least what so ever to do about games. Blu-Ray won the format war its obvious and if someone doesn't think so they are in some sort of obscene denial. PS3 is really going to get a boost in sales because of the BD playback now. But thats neither here nor there we are simply talking about a Blu-Ray player add on for 360. Because blu ray winning doesn't effect the 360 at all it only affect people who actually purchased the HD-DVD add on.

MS doesn't seem to care about either format. Pharaun69

Half the reason why I got the 360 for gaming. I honestly don't care which format is favored, as long as it doesn't affect the games being produced. Movies sales is good for profit, but it doesn't magically produce better game selection and functionality.
Speaking of which, why does so many think MS making a Blu-ray accessory is a bad call?! I was happy they didn't force feed HD on us and I'm even more stoked at the idea that Sony's major trump card is nothing more than a simple add on to the 360. Pay as you please, and realize regular DVD's are really not that bad ;)

I guess at first glance it looks odd Microsoft adopting that format. But then again only someone really into gaming knows about the Blu-Ray & PS3 vs 360 and its use of regular DVDs with an HD-DVD add on situation. Then even fewer the tech buffs are the only ones who know even more into the situation that Sony isn't even really that much behind Blu-Ray they and what something like a dozen companies or more developed including Microsoft. The non-gaming or the casual gaming public will see it as oh the xbox has a blu-ray player now. And thats how it should be because deep down its no big deal if Microsoft makes a player because once a format becomes the mainstream it is sort of free range anyways.

I guess there is a little misinformation here, Microsoft themselves are NOT going to use blu-ray instead of HD-dvd, but they will let the blu-ray accessory be devolped and sold by a 3rd party. Microsoft themselves are apparently still so damn proud of their HD-DVD (maybe because of porn is allowed on it ;))
