Yeah, the power surge is your fault, not Microsoft's. This is what surge protectors are for. If you get a good surge protector they usually have a warranty that covers the devices connected to it if a surge causes them to fail.

Actually the manual says not to plug it into a surge protector. Reason for this? because the power supply has a surge protector built in. Just a thought. By plugging it into a surge you are not correctly using the 360 according to the manual.

Had mine for a little over a month, and I'm already on my second one. Maybe my third soon too, because it's not been running correctly. I still haven't figured out if it's the discs that are not working or my console though. Discs appear to have nothing wrong.

Are you getting the error where it says "Put this disc in an Xbox 360 console"?

tryed to play gears and my 360 froze today...it got all hazy and wouldnt work. I turned it off and then back on and got the rings of death, i freaked out and shut it off. i turned it back on and eerything was good until i tryed gears again and it froze again. i turned it off and back on, noo lights so i let it cool down and im too afraid to play anymore. Is this really really bad or should i stil be fine for a while?

also if my elite gets the rings of death how long should it take for me to send it away and get it back?

This is why it's smarter to wait for a while and see how a new console performs before paying that much money. I haven't bought a 360 or PS3 because I'm waiting for time to tell if these systems are going to be worth buying and based on all of the complaints with the 360 I would say it was a waste of your money if you took the gamble and bought a 360. If your system is working with no problems then consider yourself lucky but it may only be a matter of time before your luck runs out.

whoever said that you are waiting to determine if the consoles have problems that is a dumb excuse. i have had my xbox since the february after they came out so about a year and a half and sent it in for repairs last april. my xbox survived for over a year with alot of playnig in a hot room in direct sunlight in el paso texas which is hot as hell. if you xbox breaks what the big deal? if you cannot go 2-3 weeks without playing xbox then that is sad. and my xbox when it did break had the disc error and when i got my new xbox it had a newer dvd reader. i had my regular xbox break after about 3 years and i was also getting the replace disc and i replaced the dvd reader myself and it loaded about 10x faster no joke. basically if you get an error for about a week straight send it in but hurry for halo cuz i think there is about 3 weeks left.
