1) If that girl says "kay" one more time I am going to shoot myself.

2) I just started disk 2 and I can say that Edge is a panzy. I rather play as Vyse from Skies of Arcadia or Tidus from FF10, at least they don't wine.

3) Not being able to save whenever you want. I had a cut scene so long that I thought my Xbox 360 froze, but it was just the screen savor or something, after I turned my controller back on, the cut scene continued.

Kinda afraid to play Final Fantasy 13 now. Games like this makes me not want to game anymore.

I've tried to play some Jrpgs for a while, but I haven't finish none...it started with FF 12, I couldn't do it. I was wondering if Star Ocean or FF13 could bring me back, or I'm just kind of tired of Jrpgs....Its not an RPG thing...Fallout 3 and Oblivion got my complete attention...

will I like SO4 if I try it?

That sounds like kind of an over-reaction.

If you don't like JRPG's you're not going to like Star Ocean. I just got it today and it's 3 Discs long. Pretty good game though I'm addicted.

You know at first I was gonna ask how you hate Star Ocean but after reading your opinions...you make hell of a lot of sense...which is strange for someone who said they were going to shoot themselves for hearing the word "kay" but yeh I agree with you. As for FF13 some people are having doubts now whether it will be a good game or not...honestly it will either be brilliant or the biggest RPG let down ever...gameplay is a lot like FF12 which has got me a little worried.

I haven't been able to get obsessed with a jRPG since Vagrant Story. That one was so good, everything since then has seemed lacking in richness, mostly settling for repeating environments, convoluted anime style writing and dialogue, and general hollowness. I think the last one I actually finished was Final Fantasy X, and that was mostly for my wife's sake. Man was I disappointed when that one ended.

The only one that came close to sparking my interest again recently was Infinite Undiscovery, but I eventually got sick of how much of a wimp the main character is, and again, the awful dialogue is just grating. Lots of pauses for characters to say each other's names a lot and gasp all the time. Jesus Christ, make some characers that act like PEOPLE.

I think my main beef with these now is that every single one leaves me feeling like I'm watching a crappy anime and playing a game that a team of developers somehow couldn't make consistently fun. The hardcore RPG is dead in Japan.

I think a majority, though not all, JRPGs are settling for the whiny, wussy main character so they can grow into a 1% less whiny, wussy character that saves the world. But anyway, the cutscene news reminds me of Xenosaga. I've always been a fan of JRPGs, but the long cutscenes and Xenosaga and the excruciating length of Star Ocean: Til the End of Time are reasons I'm A LOT more hesitant in the whole JRPG scene now.

But Star Ocean is also a sci-fi game as well. And when Sci-fi and fantasy meet. It's usally a little iffy. Mosy of the time the fantasy doesn't make any sense and the science is flawed.

Like the fact that the creatures are immune to railguns but can be harmed by the generic, whiny and physicaly inferior main character. My only real beef with JRPGs is that the developers use a quantity over quality mind set when making theese games. You may get one or to gems in a wave of crap. The majority of theese titles feature recycled characters and plots.

I feel sorry for the Japanese gamers though. We only get the RPGs halfway decent enough to warrant being shipped here. There is no telling about the horrors that the locals go through while searching the sea of abominations that they call Role Playing Games, just to find something good. *shudders* :O Personally I think we should import their hardcore tentacle pronz sex simulator games over anything.

...mmm tentacle pronz...

But seriously this game looks like it could be pretty good. I guess I'll rent it first.

I want Edge to go crazy and start killing everyone on his ship. Then turn to the darkside and destroy the universe.

Not sure if it's just me but i think the JRPG industry has been going downhill since FFX-2 was released, not that the games are bad, but they just don't impress anymore like those old legends way back when, Xenogears, FF7, Breath of Fire, Suikoden, Musashi, FF Tactics, Legend of Mana and many others i didn't have the pleasure to play because i was too young when they came out.

In the meantime WRPGs are still as good as they were back when Fallout 1 came out.

It's just my opinion though, still think those old JRPGs from the PSONE and SNES own most of the WRPGs.

Agreed. And you know why... it's beacuse most of the jRPGs from that era were all completely different games with good if not excellent original stories and fresh new styles of play. Vagrant Story, Threads of Fate, Legend of Mana, Legend of Legaia, Legend of Dragoon... And now today you get "Oh, it's turned based, BUT, we added (X)!" Great. Thanks. Or "hey, it's also an ACTION game!" - but they fail to mention that the action is nowhere near Devil May Cry or even Dynasty warriors in terms of depth and fun. (There are of course some exceptions; I'm generalizing)

Even a remake/sequel to Vagrant Story would seem fresh at this point (and would be great, too!)

You know what Square Enix should really try their hand at? A first-person RPG, ala Oblivion or King's Field. THAT would be something!

I ve just started Star Ocean and what I ve noticed is that the characters seem like they will develop over time, if they dont then yeah there is a huge difference between FF or other really well know JRPG's compared to this one. Why? Simply because all the great JRPG's immerse you in the gameplay and you actually care about what happens to the characters and also the battle systems is always more fun on the GREAT JRPG's. I ll have to see how Star Ocean turns out but I am really excited to keep playing and see what happens

I am playing LO right now and I like it it and all, just having a tough time sticking with it for some reason. I have been playing RPG's since the NES days, maybe I don't love these type of RPG's as much as I use to, not sure.

He never mentioned the word "suck", read first, if im not wrong he meant that the action in the "new" JRPGs are advertised as innovative but it doesn't compare to the great action games, like DMC(been a fan of DW for quite some time but it's not that great) or Ninja Gaiden 1, agree on that.

I think all those games you mentioned are nothing compared to the old ones either, the light novels in LO for instance are great and really well done, BUT i'd take the War of the Lions story from Fial Fantasy Tactics over it any day of the year.

I didn't say the action in Dynasty Warriors was good either. That was more of an example of a kinda sucky action game that still beats the new jRPGs in the action department.

and iBoo01, I did say that there are exceptions. I liked FFXII quite a lot actually, and Lost Odessy is a good one too, but even the better of the newer games are still harder to stick with than the older Squaresoft titles.

And to put some reality to that statement, I have recently gone back and played the old greats again, and finished them again. They've still got lasting appeal. (Vagrant Story, Threads of Fate, Legend of Mana...) A lot of the newer games, I will probably not finish or ever go back to. They're just inferior.

I really really hate games that don't let you save whenever you want. Some developers don't realize that people don't have all the time in the world to play games. I remember one time I had to simply shut my system off and re-do about 2 hours of Lost Odyssey because I had to go to class and there were no savepoints in sight. It's just short-sighted and annoying to use something as archaic as save point for games that are this long.
