So I got **** ted on by my XBox today. I was playing COD4 and the screen got messed up looking, turned my system off and got the E 74 message. I have to send my 360 to Microsoft and get it fixed for $100.

Do I have any other options here? I don't want to try the towel trick ( I DO want to try it, but I'm not going to, more like it) and I wouldn't trust myself following one of those instructional repair videos.

Any ideas? And why is it that I have to pay Microsoft when my system overheats? Why don't they stand by the product and offer to fix it for people when this happens (I've had it for two years, my warantee is up).

Anyone with stories about how this problem got resolved -- without having to shell out a hundred bucks?

hum only way to get it fixed for free is to get the 3 rings of death and that part you have to do on ur own.

If I wanted to get the three rings on purpose, how would I do that?

Also, I already told a customer service guy about the one ring problem. Think they might call me out and figure I messed with it on purpose?

Did you already order the box and repair for the 100$? If not, then they won't know it was you that called. The same guy doesn't answer ALL of the phone calls. Or emails.

The 1 red light E74 error message is caused by a problem with the A/V cables, or the chip the AV cables plug into. If its the chip that screwed up, there is no way to fix it. They will have to replace that entire chip. So you COULD do the towel trick once MAYBE twice, without risk of further damage. But to be hoenst, if the 3RL are what you are going for, you can do the towel trick, and it MIGHT give you the 3RLs. It did for me. Please take in to precaution that I am not recommending anything, nor am I responsible for any damage done to your console .:)

Yeah it is risky.

Is Microsoft basically charging me $100 because my system overheated? Is that something that's my fault? Or am I looking at this wrong?

Ha ha, thanks for the advice Warlock.

Do they have a way of telling that I intentionally got the three rings? I mean, I provided the serial number and all my personal info during this call. I don't want someone pulling up my personal info and realizing that I'm trying to run s h it on them, you know?

It COULD be your fault. It's impossible to tell. So rightfully they should repair their own horrible manufactured console for free. But they refuse to do that. It's how the rich stay rich. Someone I knew was talking to an guy at microsoft over the phone. And the guy from microsoft told him the only way to get around paying for the repair was to get the 3RLs. They aren't suggesting anything, but I don't think they care if you get the 3RLs on purpose. Either way it's their fault.

I am seriously starting to think about getting the 3RLs then...

I mean, if I dropped the XBox, or generally just mistreated it, I would have no problem paying for the repairs. But this all just strikes me as pretty damn unfair.

next time just buy an extended warranty plan whereever you get it (gamestop, best buy) for like 50 bucks and you get it for like 2 years. if you do it at best buy, you send it in and get a gift card worth the value of your system in 2 weeks. its how i traded my white 360 for my elite 360
