I try to join my friends over gears, halo and gh3. And i keep having the same problem you NAT is moderate. meaning I cant join them. except I can join my other friend with this problem.

Anybody know if I need a new router or if I just need to configure my current router?

help is hugely appreciated.

either put your xbox in the DMZ of the modem, or forward port 3074: TCP & UDP to your xbox.

I had this problem as well.

Honestly, how i fixed it was by getting a different connection.

Do you run through a router?

Do you live in an apartment building or other building with more than one family?

Do you have your own internet connection: aka, do you pay comcast / verizon, etc, or do you pay your landlord / building?

The reason I ask is because sometimes on shared connections, companies will block ports.

NAT problems come from mixed communications because of routers. Opening ports will not help because it has to do with the connection itself going through the router. You will have even more problems connection to people that are using a router also, but if someone has an OPEN nat and you have a Moderate nat you will still connect. Moderate to Moderate will give you problems and Moderate to Strict NAT will give you problems. The best thing to do is buy a new router or try and set UPNP. Also sometimes you can unplug your router and plug it back in and your NAT will become Open. Try these methods and if none work buy a new router. Xbox has a list of compatible routers.

rubbish. You dont need a xbox live compatible router to have an open nat.

for DMZ you usually just specify the IP address of the machine you want to DMZ. you need to login to your router via a web browser. In the address bar put in the IP of the modem, eg: http://192.168.1.1 and login with user name and password to get to the config. You may need to read the manual (or download it) from the manufacturer to get user & pass.

your manual can tell you how to port forward as well, if its not listed on portforward.com.

I found the solution for my D-link router was to enable UPnP (Universal Plug and Play). It then detected my 360 and allowed it to access everything unrestricted. I solved this by troubleshooting with Halo 3 and trying a bunch of different things one at a time including port forwarding and that DMZ stuff. But the only thing that actually opened up my NAT was UPnP. Once I checked that UPnP box, my NAT settings were open.

Make sure you have a compatible router

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/connecttolive/xbox360/homenetworking/equipment.htm

If you don't get one. If you do then make sure you read the tutorials to fix you nat.
