Need Gears of War pointers from good players

I have played through single player and didn't get into multiplayer because I didn't really think it was competitively good. I play mostly Counter-strike on PC, COD2 on 360 and H2 on xbox. I want to get into Gears of war but because I havent played online much at all I get destroyed quickly. Can you guys give me some good pointers?

When it first came out, the chainsaw was the most used way to kll people now I hear its rarely used due to the increased vulnurability. I see most people use shotgun. How effective is it and at what ranges? Any tips like this can be helpful. I would like to be competitive in this game. Thanks.

USE SHOTGUN 90% OF THE TIME, AND LEARN HOW TO RUN AND DIVE TOWARDS PLAYERS

when using the shotgun in closerange, try to not freak out and just relax. shoot afew rounds and do an active reload. once you get the reload its time to kill(if you havent already done so with the first shots) while shooting..try to move side to side between shots and roll when you notice the person shooting at you isnt moving much...this is sign that he/she is in zoom..which gives you the perfect chance to roll in and shoot them.

also..never...NEVER..RUN AROUND ZOOMING WITH THE SHOTGUN WHILE THE TARGET IS MOVING!.

Be careful when you roll at someone. If you get shot in a roll you will most likely die. Dont roll left or right if you're face to face shotgunnin with someone, this will get your head blown off most of the time.

Unless you are smart about it and time their shots vs. yours. Also with the whole rolling into them thing, you must be right in front of them because if you aren't, and your shot just damages them a bit, you're dead. Unless they're new at the game as well. I find the best way to get an automatic kill with the shotty is to just straight roadie run into their back and as soon as you get to them just press the fire button, you don't even have to release A, and they will explode. Active reload as someone else stated is very effective too.

Dont take a lancer or sniper against a shotgun.

If you aim with the shotgun use a quickaim, just hold the l trigger for 1 second at a time.

Make sure you communicate.

stay with the team when first starting...you will learn from them and they will cover you when you struggle....hopefully anyway

it took me awhile to learn what to do and how to be good, im still not the best at it

also play annex games when first starting..i find they really help to give you more experience when you play as you will respawn about 10 seconds after you die normally
