if you play more than 4v4 games like 5v5 or higher. you have to press the DPad to talk to your team. otherwise your talking is only whoever is in proximity of you. So you'll be able to hear your teammates and your opponents if they're close.
Also check your NAT settings, make sure it is open and not Moderate/Strict.
What if you're playing rumble pit against everyone ?? Does it mute then ?? And how do I check Nat settings ??celebate
lol oh u were playing rumble pit, well in an FFA game i dont think u can talk to anyone, and nat settings have absolutely nothing to do with communication only connecting, u can check them by going to the settings bar on your dashboard and checking online connections

NAT settings isn't just connection. I have Moderate settings at school and I can connect with my friends an all, but I can't hear them. We tried doing private chat and we can connect but no sound can come in or out. We originally thought it was our mics, but it works when we're not playing together. I even went out to buy a new mic and no luck. So I believe NAT settings can mess with communication over LIVE.
As for Rumble Pit, you can't hear your opponents in a ranked FFA.
Also my buddies I play with are in another dorm building with Moderate Connections themselves.
We can connect and all but just no source of communication.

so it works when u arent playing together? wouldnt that suggest that its not your NAT settings, cause your NAT settings applies with everything on XBL, so if u cant hear your friends in theory u shouldnt be able to hear anyone

I can hear everyone else when I play. if I do random match making or whatnot. But for some reason with my friends who are also in Moderate connections, I can't hear.
For instance. when we play 4v4 Halo. We can play together, but we can't hear/talk to each other. After the match is over and we go back to the lobby, I can hear my opponents but not my friends. This also goes for BattleField. I can hear my teammates who are in proximity but I can't hear my friends who are in my squad.
I brought this up to the Bungie forums and everyone there seemed to all relate it to the Nat problem.

hmmm that is a tricky one, cause im sure when i had a moderate NAT i could talk to and hear everyone, now whether it means that they all had open NATs alrdy i dont know, but ive certaintly never had that ^ problem before

when your playing rumbl pit your not suppose to hear anyone and no one can hear you. I think bungie did this to alleviate the trash talking that gets put of hand. Thats not a connection problem. when you play big team you press th d pad so all teamates can hear you outside of the proximity area.
