Need help with purchasing a memory card

My GF has a 360 and whenever I go over I always take my 20 gig hard drive with me. It's a pain in the ass because I don't have any sort of carrying case for it and sooner or later I'm going to drop it. So I figured a solution would be to buy a memory card?

Would I be able to transfer all my saved games on my hard drive and gamer profile to a memory card and just use that to take to my GF's house? Whatever gets saved on the memory card, I assume I could just saved it onto my hard drive aftrwards as well?

Any info? Is this easy to do? I think a 256MB memory card would be enough just for game saves and playing xbox live on my gamertag. Any help would be appreciated.
