Just wondering if anyone else has this problem.

I have installed the new dashboard hoping that i would be able to run my monitor at its native res (1680x1050), using it to its full potential. My  monitor is a 22" Samsung Syncmaster 226BW, hooked up to my 360 using the official Xbox vga cable.

THough to my suprise once i chose the new resolution, it doesent utilize they full screen of the monitor. There are black gaps at the top and bottom of the display ( about and inch) as if i was watching a movie on a tv. The onscereen display seeems to be more 16:9 since hight is taken away from teh image.

It seems that the xbox360 doesnt support 16:10 aspect ratios at all, just a quick fix for monitor users.

Cheers if anyone else has this experienced this porblem.

Supporting the resolution doesn't necessarily mean that there won't be black bars. On SD screens the 360 supports 480p, but many games have black bars at the top and bottom. It's due to the 16:9 aspect ratio that the games natively run in. The 360 is outputting the 16:10 ratio, but the content that it is displaying doesn't support it. So there are two choices. The 360 can display the content with the black bars and keep the integrity of the image intact, or it can stretch the image vertically and distort the visuals.

1680x1050 does not mean that the Xbox really generates the graphics in that resolution. essentially, it takes the 720p picture (1280x720) and then adds bars to make it 1680x1050. The benefit of adding black bars and sending 1680 to your screen is that it does not interpolate, so the picture quality is better, but you will not (and possibly never) get a true 1680x1050 resolution.

i have a 22' monitor too and was very excited about this lets say we accept those black bars but the graphics aren't even sharpened a bit and in games like gta4 and gears2 the screen size is changed i mean for example niko and cars are wider .D

I used and still have to use the 1360x768 rez to get the dash and my games to fill the whole screen.

The Xbox could also output it, but the games are not made for a 16:10 Aspect Ratio. Try playing an old PC Game on Widescreen and chances are that a) the game is 4:3 and you have huge black borders or b) you have to manually tweak some of the settings to make it compatible or c) it's cut off like Bioshock. When Microsoft made the Xbox, they set up guidelines, and those were pretty much: 16:9 at 720 and 1080 or 4:3 at 480. There is no technical reason - it is just convention, and obviously they do not want to break that convention. Also, as a video Game developer, it is easier only having to support 1 or 2 Aspect Rations rather than 3.
