I am wanting to buy a XBOX 360, but I want to wait until MS starts releasing systems with thenew chipset which supposedly reduces the probability of the unit failing. Anyway, can someone tell me if there is any news as to when these new sets are supposed to start appearing in stores? Also, how could soemone tell if the system has the new or older chipsets?

I don't want to drop $500 on an Elite system and then 2~3 months later it breaks. I would rather wait to buy one if it is supposedly improving in the near future.

I don't know about any new chipset in future 360s but I think the new ones have a new heatsink which should take care of a lot of the problems. Also they just had a price drop and I think the elite is 450 now.But you may want the regular 360 whick I think is 350 now and the only diffrence is the elite has the bigger HDD. From what I undestand they put the HDMI port into both the elite and regular sku.

I had read somewhere that they were being installed around the time of the price drop, which is why I thought it was in the near future. I had heard that not only did the new systems run cooler, but the chipset cost less to manufacture thereforeMS couldkeep the lower price. Don't beat me up for it, but I can remember where I read that. (hoping it was true)

I'm wondering the same thing. The new chips are 65nm where the old chips were 90nm. I guess there are rumors that MS has ordered production to start for 45nm chips. While the 65nm might help, it's the new heatsink that should really help.

Link
The newer 65nm chip which the company produces for Microsoft went into production over the last two quarters, and Chia Song Hwee, Chartered's president and CEO, said that "you would expect 45nm to come on stream about 18 months from that timeframe."engadget
