It's a game with a ton of freedom, lots to do and explore, a great battle system, and just plain fun. It was one of my favorite games last year. Be warned though because a lot of people get upset about this: you can't continue your game after you beat the main quest. Either save before doing the last quest and explore the stuff you haven't, or do everything you want before starting the main quest. You've been warned. Keep multiple save files.

You should expect a very long game that might take over your gaming life. You'll also encounter a lot of bugs.

As long as you don't have ADD and can take in the atmosphere of the game you'll have a blast. The world is just filled with things to do and places to discover. Missions can be approached in different ways though it usually has to do with what kind of character you make. The DLC wasn't exactly what I was hoping for but I took it for what it was worth and enjoyed it none the less. Next batch should be more in line with what people would expect. Also in regards to the game ending after the final mission just keep a save file that you saved during a mission called The American Dream as moving on from there will lock you into the the final mission and you won't be able do anything else you haven't done yet. Luckily the third batch of DLC raises the level 20 cap to 30 and allows you to continue on after the final mission.

you should save once in a while the saves aren't that big in size. try saving before big decisions when u finish quests when ur faced with speech checks and whatnot, if ur facing a horde of super mutants and u dont have any stimpaks, saving is good :D. also helps with the karma achievements if u have a lot of saves as u can load back and get em done easily

The thing I learned is to not be paralyzed by choices. This game gives the player so much freedom that early on I found myself having a hard time choosing what to do for fear of missing out on one path by choosing to take another path. For example, if I kill this person I'll open up new possibilities with another person, but I'll lose possibilities with the dead one, etc, etc. I've since learned to just go for it everytime and not mull over these decisions. The sooner I just jumped right in and stopped agonizing over every little thing I started to really have a good time. Also, be ready to die, a lot, until you level up a little bit more. Just stick with it and it'll all be worth it.

The game will give you a heads up, you will know when you are about to head out for the last mission. So save before you head out, that way after you do it you can reload and play the side missions and things you may have missed. Also another note on the saving system, be very careful, it's much like Oblivion. You can completely ruin your game, so save often and over different slots. The game has an "autosave" (can be disabled, I would) say for example you're playing a good character, and you accidently hit an NPC and they come after you...you turn and run out a door only to find out the game autosaves when you come out the other side. It's not a huge deal and it can be turned off, but just warning you ahead of time so you don't ruin a playthrough. It's an awesome game, you'll love it. Good choice taking it over Fear 2.

A strong recommendation is to not rush through the game. I did it the first time and I was kind of disapointed then I found out how many hours can be spent on this game. I went back and am replaying it, and I am loving every minute of it!

Here's what you can expect:

1.Expect to ask yourself, "Why didn't get this game earlier???" Because this truely was 2008 game of year on the Xbox360. With the main mission, side quests, expansion pack and generally exploring and upgrading your guy you will log in some serious gametime.

2.Expect to be glued to your couch for hours at a time, expect to lose some hours of sleep and expect to drift off at work or school thinking about what your gonna do next in the game.

3.Expect to say,"WOW, I feel like my full $69 outa this game and can't wait to drop more loot on the expansions".

You can do whatever you want. It is an amazing game. It is as streamlined or as open ended as you want it to be. I highly recommend exploring. Once you get into the game you will be consumed. It's one of the best games of the year. My only gripe is that the first person shooting isn't the best but you can get over that by using V.A.T.S. to dismember and destroy your enemies.

Well you opinion on the game is really based on what you like about it for example good green forests like in oblivion or a toxic wasteland with irradiated animals i say fallout 3 is a game free of choice the choices branch down from karma to to speech choices

expect to play it through more than once. I did my first playthrough in about 40 hours. now i'm on my second and i'm doing pretty much the opposite of what i did at first. I've been exploreing a lot more and i think i'm on about 85 hours now. if i didn't use "fast travel" i'd probably be on 4 times that amount of hours playing. basically you should expect to play this game for a loooooong time more than once. i'm actually thinking of turning off fast travel on my next play through...not sure if its an option but even if it isnt, i won't use it. the amount of choice you have and the map size can be overwhelming at times. so many times i've come to a forked underground tunnel then decided to go one way and come back later to see whats on the other side BUT i get distracted by something else on the side i took and i explore something else and then forget aboutend up never coming back to explore what i meant to coz theres so much to see.
