I was clicking around on the xbox website and started to notice that the newer games are in 720 instead of 1080i. is there a reason for this, i've read a few people thinking that games are giving them RRoD, could this be beause of games being in 1080i.Or are the game companies trying to screw us again by giving us less and charging more?i doubt both, but i'm just wondering, why madden 09 is 720p and madden 08 is 1080i.

Most 360 games are actually being rendered in 720p and there are a handful that are 1080p. The 720p, 1080i and 1080p indicators on the packaging (and Xbox website) are merely there to state a supported resolution. You can set whatever resolution you like in the dashboard and the 360 will upscale it to that, speaking to 1080i/p, but if you have it set to 720p then that is what you are actually getting.

So there is no need to worry about getting less, as it is the same as always.

720p provides better visual quality over 1080i, especially for games like Madden where there's lots of fast movements. You can set your Xbox 360 to ouput in 1080i if you so desire though... but 720p is definitely the way.

Disregard Madden 08 and 1080i, as I said before it just means that it is a supported resolution for the 360 upscale to. Unless specified by the developer, most games are rendered at 720p and anything above that is either being converted by the 360 or your television.

If you have a 720p TV set the 360 at 720p, if it is 1080i then set it to 1080i and if it's 1080p set it to 1080p. Just know that you more than likely do NOT have a television that displays at 1080i, those are only CRT TVs, if you have an LCD, DLP or Plasma then it is either 720p or 1080p. Just because your TV might say 1080i in the manual doesn't mean anything other than it will accept a 1080i signal, but it will take it and convert back down to 720p, because that is all the set is capable of.

What is the make and model of the TV? I would disregard what the other guy said, although he is right, but he was comparing 720p to 1080i, so in the event your TV has a native 1080p resolution then 1080p is what you should choose.

You aren't going to get any benefit in choosing a resolution on the 360 that does not match your TVs.

its a Vizio 37" don't know the model. At 720 all the text is pixeled but at 1080p the text is smooth.

All I can say is that, most, if not all Xbox 360 games are 720p. Dont believe the box. 1080i is possible but 1080p is out of the question. Hardly any games support 1080p. You can google a list for the games and their resolutions and you'll be surprised. A lot of games are not even full 720p. Call of Duty 4 being one of them. And this goes for the PS3 as well. MGS4 isnt even full 720p. The topic of scaling.. I dont know. I'm no expert. But 1080p? Dream on, at least for now. Even if they scaled or rendered in 1080p, you wont even notice the difference. Proof? Well, Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Lair are rendered in 1080p but when tested in 720p, they look nearly identical. For now, they're really just gimmicks. The only media that benefits from 1080p are Blurays. Not even digital television can broadcast in 1080p. If you want an HDTV, just buy 1080p so you'll be ready. Besides, most manufacturers are starting to get rid of 720p HDTVs and replacing them all with 1080p so you might as well. On top of that, they're really cheap nowadays.

Every single XBOX360 game is 720p with 2 exceptions on ether side

2 games are 640p (Halo 3 is one of them)

2 games are 1080p (Virtua Tennis and Def Jam Icon)

Thanks for all the replies. Is 640p even real? i've never heard of that, even when i was shopping for my tv 640p never came up. I heard that 720p would either downscale or up scale to 720p, nothing ever about 640p.Also if MSG4 is lower than 720p why is it one of the best looking games on the system? Once again not trying to come off as a d*ck, just wondering. i just looked up 640p on halo 3, it says that 640p at 1080p and 720p at 1080p almost the same. sorry about questioning the 640p without looking.

640p is not a real TV resolution, but it is possible to run a game at that. As for MGS 4 I don't think it's ever been confirmed what it really runs at, I've heard 576p, 640p, 720p and 1080p. And the bottom line is who cares? Unless Hideo Kojima himself comes out and says the real resolution I'd be skeptical of what some dandy in a forum says.
