Most 360 games are actually being rendered in 720p and there are a handful that are 1080p. The 720p, 1080i and 1080p indicators on the packaging (and Xbox website) are merely there to state a supported resolution. You can set whatever resolution you like in the dashboard and the 360 will upscale it to that, speaking to 1080i/p, but if you have it set to 720p then that is what you are actually getting.
So there is no need to worry about getting less, as it is the same as always.
so wait if a game as in madden 09 says 720p and i up it to 1080p it doesn't look as good as if i were to up Madden 08 from 1080i to 1080p? or should i just leave it at 720 at all times? i'm confused i thought i knew this stuff. just to make sure i'm not trying to sound mean just really want to understand.XPHOBOS666X
Disregard Madden 08 and 1080i, as I said before it just means that it is a supported resolution for the 360 upscale to. Unless specified by the developer, most games are rendered at 720p and anything above that is either being converted by the 360 or your television.
If you have a 720p TV set the 360 at 720p, if it is 1080i then set it to 1080i and if it's 1080p set it to 1080p. Just know that you more than likely do NOT have a television that displays at 1080i, those are only CRT TVs, if you have an LCD, DLP or Plasma then it is either 720p or 1080p. Just because your TV might say 1080i in the manual doesn't mean anything other than it will accept a 1080i signal, but it will take it and convert back down to 720p, because that is all the set is capable of.
ok my tv says all lol, but i have it set at 1080p and it looks the best. now going back to what the other guy said, is that true leaving at 720 on faster games look better? btw thanks for answering.XPHOBOS666X
What is the make and model of the TV? I would disregard what the other guy said, although he is right, but he was comparing 720p to 1080i, so in the event your TV has a native 1080p resolution then 1080p is what you should choose.
You aren't going to get any benefit in choosing a resolution on the 360 that does not match your TVs.
Thanks for all the replies. Is 640p even real? i've never heard of that, even when i was shopping for my tv 640p never came up. I heard that 720p would either downscale or up scale to 720p, nothing ever about 640p.Also if MSG4 is lower than 720p why is it one of the best looking games on the system? Once again not trying to come off as a d*ck, just wondering. i just looked up 640p on halo 3, it says that 640p at 1080p and 720p at 1080p almost the same. sorry about questioning the 640p without looking.XPHOBOS666X
640p is not a real TV resolution, but it is possible to run a game at that. As for MGS 4 I don't think it's ever been confirmed what it really runs at, I've heard 576p, 640p, 720p and 1080p. And the bottom line is who cares? Unless Hideo Kojima himself comes out and says the real resolution I'd be skeptical of what some dandy in a forum says.
