I found this article and thought it was a good read. My personal opinion is that I hope my third 360 doesn't die like this one when Halo 3 comes out.

http://www.qj.net/Recently-manufactured-Xbox-360-bricked-after-20-minutes/pg/49/aid/101337

http://games.gearlive.com/playfeed/article/q307xbox-360-red-light-of-doom-problem

I understand it's been beaten to death before but I feel it's really worth bringing to light. Do we truly expect a device we paid over $300 for to die so quickly from normal use? I'm on my third 360 myself and even then my current one is artifacting and giving me grief.

I'm not looking to sue MS or anything. I'm not looking for sympathy or a refund either. I willingly bought my 360 knowing about the problems with the hardware against my concience just to play Oblivion early, since I didn't have the PC I have now back then. I know that any problems I have with my 360 will be covered at no charge up until February 17th 2009 (warranty). So I guess my question is this.

Are good games really enough for people? I only got a 360 to play Oblivion and anything else after that was just icing. So what if games like that we're exclusive? (at that time Oblivion was PC-360 only). What if Halo 3 was not only on one platform? What would make you wade through all the negative press and go through the effort to buy/own/maintain a 360?

Let's hope it doesn't. (OT) I'm now hooked up with all 3 consoles, a decent PC, and two handhelds. So I feel covered for now. But this isn't about the other systems. If it was the it would belong in SW. Thanks for commenting.

I definately would go through the 'effort' I treat mine no different then I did my PS2 and have had no problems. Also with this console being 'new' it most definately is NOT new. He got it back from a bricked one he sent to MS, when they send you back a console they don't give you a brand new one, then they wouldn't be making as much money as they could, they send you someone elses old 360 that broke that they've fixed. Unfortunately for him they fixed that one wrong, but that's why (to me) at least it's a better idea to get a PRP from Bestbuy. When my 360 does crap out, I go there and I get a brand new console right there, no waiting for a box, then waiting for a new one to come in the mail...which also means when mine dies I'll also get one with HDMI!

Maybe it was faked but I'm fairly confident the author's 360 was newly manufactured. I know that here in Canada they only do replacments. The 360 I have now was made last month.

This is a photo of the author's 360 from the second link.

My 360 broke down this week (fried GPU)and I made the decision to trade in my PS3 for an ELITE.And yes, the games available and to be released are what made my decision.

Man that's bloody pathetic. Seriously. I got my 360 very soon after the original launch date, and I'm currently getting one red ring when I start up the 360. Through turning it on and off i'll eventually get it working, but it's extremely frustrating and i'd rather the thing would just die so I could send it back and get a new one; why should I have to pay to repair a console that Microsoft should have working properly anyway.

I bought a 360 at launch, 3 days later it dies, i return it and get a new one lucky me i got a whole 4 days before that one dies, returned it for a refund, waited for PS3, haven't had a problem since.

M$ needs to get their act together 11million consoles sold with 33%returned is not 11 million sold.

Yup it's pretty crazy...I had a launch console and that one broke after 2 weeks...about 3 months later and I went and got a new 360 by ways of some smooth talkery...and that one recently broke on the 17th...took 2 weeks for the coffin to get here and I still havent sent it out yet.

look, i love the games coming out on the 360, but my god the system itself is garbage, after almost two years on the market there hasn't be a honest attempt to fix the problem. They say a new chip will lower the noise, and the heat but i dont see it making any difference in the systems failure rate. If they don't fix this soon it will hurt them even more in the long run.

Returns to sitting on the porch waiting for my refurbished 360 to arrive.

I'm also on my 3rd, it's annoying, and Microsoft is hurting because of it, and will continue to lose sales because of people who choose not to get one because of the horror stories they hear. You know the circle of life. But I've bought games, controllers, live accounts, points, etc. And if I would trade it all in, I'd only get half if that, so I keep it, plus gears is all I really play currently, and I've been waiting for Too Human, which is the reasoning behide my purchase of a 360.

Well my 360 iv'e had for about a year and a half just got the rrod, and my buddy is fixing it with the X-Clamp replacement, he said so far the fix rate for the it is about 90% for him. But if that doesn't fix it I will buy a PS3. Only because I think MS is giving me no choice. I refuse to be garbage, with or without a warranty.

They are complete idiots (MS). The new Falcon chip wont help ANYTHING, it generates less heat yeah, but the CPU isn't the problem, it's the GPU. And the new Heatsink for the GPU solved nothing, my friend Cody has one a new 360 with the extra GPU, he had it for less than a month, 3rod. He said he called MS and got so frustrated because the guy from India couldn't speak clearly and he got no where he is thinking about PAYING my friend to fix it with the X-Clamp.

my 360 recently came back from repair for the 3rd time with 2 new problems which were entirely unrelated to the orginal problem (red lights). I sent a letter and now theyre sending me a replacement console. When it gets here Ill be counting the days before it breaks.

I think that one pic is a fake. The reason is the newer Premium 360s have HDMI. Not if a Core

I dont know for sure but it looks different to me. Anyways any system can break new or old but something just dont add up here.

Lolz. Lots of replies and horror stories so far. Thanks for the comments!

But, I feel I failed to ask the hard-hitting question.

If the 360 didn't have your favorite game as an exclusive (ie;Halo 3, Mass Effect, Gears, etc). What would make you want to purchase/own/maintain the system, even with all the hardware failures, negative press, and inconvienience? What features does it have that make you really want to own one if we were only talking about the Hardware and Xbox Live?

For me. It's probably the fact that it keeps me from playing games in long marathons that I used to do. I'm afraid if I play for more than 2 hours it would go kaput.

I'd still buy one because the price is reasonable and you get good graphics and games with that price. The Wii is fun for a couple weeks but then it got boring, and PS3 didn't impress me to much when I tried my friend (resistance, which was supposed to be the best Ps3 game at the time)

Dont wanna hijack the thread but quick question, since alot of people here had there 360s replaced. Once u send it in does the warrenty reset? because it would suck if you got the 3 red lights 2 and ahalf years in, get a another 360 and get the same problem 8 months later and the warenty is gone.

i wouldn't feel bad jacking the thread, considering it was dead already. As for your question I'd imagine they would but you might have more luck starting a new thread and hearing from soeone who has sent their 360 to MS

They already did like 6 months ago, which half the reason is the actuall owner like putting the 360 on carpet,no vent space for the fans, stacking stuff ontop of the 360,moving the 360 around with a disc inside ect.

Anyways im still on my first 360 (actually 2nd but I returned the 1st 360 since a prong in the cord broke) and I've had it almost 9 months.

:edit: btw if your talking about your 360 ignore my post, thought you where talking about 360's in general,so if its that reason totally ignore my post since Im barely awake and its 3 am.

I just got the RROD after 3 months of ownership. I feel like i've lost a really close friend. Thankfully, my neighbor doesn't play his 360 that often, so he's letting me borrow it until mine comes back from repair.

Funny, this is the very topic my husband and I were discussing over breakfast this morning. Our second 360 is starting to act up the same way our first one did before it went to console heaven. Even having a Best Buy warranty, we're a little concerned. We both don't like the feeling of wondering if today is the day the red lights will come on.

If my 360 gives me the 3 red lights of doom, ill take it back to the store to get it replaced. Sell the new one and buy either an elite.
