Hey guys. Well, I guess it will take some years until we see the new xbox console, but hey what do you think it will be the next disk format? Will Microsoft stick to dvd's or will they copy Sony with the blu-ray?

TBH it would probably be smart for them to use HD-DVD for games, it would make it a royal pain in the butt to copy them..... I mean who the heck has an HD-DVD reader anymore?

They really wont have a choice and will probably need to go with blu ray. It's not just the fact that they need more space for games (average next gen game wont fit on DVD) but its also the fact that it's is the standard for for movies and other video now which means leaving it will be a major blow to the next system. I really dont see them going another route.

They will most likely have to use Blu-ray. As said previously, it has become the new standard. HD-DVD is dead.

I'm not so sure. For every blu-ray you have to sent at least $1 to the blu-ray cartel err....'association'. That's $50+ million in the life of a console.

It makes a lot of sense to use something else. Something like USB flash drives, for example.

They'll probably develop a new format for it. Or redesign BluRay to avoid payments fo the BluRay association (like nintendo has done with the Wii optical disc and DVD).

i actually heard somewhere on a giantbomb bombcast that someone was talking with someone from microsoft and they said they mentioned a strong case for HD-DVD.

I think It could actually work thou because dvds still out sell blue raysMicrosoft could bring back the HD-DVD all together or just for games. I would prefer just digital copies. you never need to pre order, you never need to wait in line. the game would dl at midnight of the games release. there would never be sold outs of games. It would also eliminate preorder bonouses and the used game sales controversy which would eliminate online pass codes and what not. and hopefully make games cheaper. (no disce, case, booklet etc.)

mictosft may use a dvd again im not to sure they need bluray , the average game does to fit on a dvd lol heck wwe 2011 was 4.5 gigs out of the 9 gigs on the disc

and ms is developing a bigger sized dvd , so they may be using that

Either? HD DVD is a long dead format, why would they use that?

I doubt that they will use either. Discs in general are dying technology. With the abundance of nigh capacity HD storage and high speed internet, I would not be surprised to see games downloaded, ala Netflix. Xbox already has that capability, I would be very surprised if they dont take advantage of it

Blu Ray is patented by Sony. Microsoft will have to pay a substantial amount of money to use it on their system. Blu Ray is years ahead of Microsoft's DVD format which has been around for what, a decade now? 80GB vs 7 GB? think of all the PS3 exclusives that utilize a large portion of the blu ray. Sony will win the next gen console war, no doubt.
