Next Xbox - possible reveal in 2012

Microsoft's successor to the Xbox 360 will be revealed at E3 2012 and developer Crytek is making a next-generation Timesplitters 4, according to sources speaking to Videogamer.com.

A "high-ranking industry source at Crytek" told the website that while specifications for the next console have not been finalized, Crytek is using Microsoft's DirectX 11 for next-gen development. The source says Microsoft will announce the new Xbox in the next year, likely at E3 2012.

"Crytek believes that Microsoft will announce and launch its new machine ahead of rival Sony, though the developer is also investing resources into next-generation PlayStation development."

Meanwhile, the source also claims TimeSplitters 4 is currently in development using CryEngine 3 and is already being demoed internally. The game was also apparently shown off in private last week at E3 2011.

"As for the game itself, the new TimeSplitters is reported to focus on the series' branching paths and exploratory nature, with sandbox gameplay elements a big priority. The current goal is for levels to feature multiple routes that lead to the same overall conclusion."

Microsoft and Crytek both declined to comment on this report.

Well, I can't say I'm that surprised by it, since the 360 has been out for a while now. It seems to make sense to me - what do you guys think?

Yeah I don't see why it wouldn't be. I'm guessing MS is designing the next Xbox to be compatible with all Kinects.

Exactly...realising a console early has it's advantages and drawbacks. The first xbox still had loads of potential before MS decided to pull the plug on it!!!

they could always make the new Xbox Kinect compatible, and even if they announce it at E3 in 2012 is prolly wont release until holiday 2013.

Well it's about time if you ask me... Assuming MS is introducing it next E3 it could take a year or two till release date. That's something around 2013-2014.
I can see Halo 4 releasing together with next box!

PS: Please Kinect is not a reason to delay... obviously the technology will be updated and implemented in the next unit.

Ok, but you'll have to wait at least another year before you see any real decent games on it.

I don't really see why we need a new console at the moment. But it wouldn't surprise me if they announced a new one next year and it came out in 2013-2014.

Here's the thing that scares me with MS(if history repeats it self)they release a new system and automatically drop support of their current system that CLEARLY has alot to offer.

That timeline makes the most sense. New system shown at E3 next year with a 2013 release. Still a long way off.

Sorry, but PC's are more than a generation ahead in terms of power than the Xbox 360/PS3, so it's time for new consoles.

Hardcore players don't give a crap about Kinect, so I don't know why people are even mentioning that. Also, it's not like the 360 can't coexist with the next Xbox. The PS2 did fine for many years after the PS3 was launched.

I'm ready for games that take advantage of the new engines like Frostbite 2 and Cryengine 3. Stop being cheap penny pinchers and embrace nex-gen gaming.

You obviously don't remember that the 360 was more powerful than the best PC gaming rig when it was released in 2005 and it cost much less. Consoles can be made cheaper than PC's because of a thing called "mass production of custom hardware".

The multiple disc thing does make the xbox seem outdated :P
