I recent played the Maddan 07 demo and I enjoyed the game and always enjoyed watching NFL when is on.

However I don't really understand the game that much, including the different formations you use in defence/attack.

What I want is a recommendation of an NFL game to play to get used to it. Obviously I don't want to be spending £35 on a game I may not understand

I'd say your best bet is blitz the league. The plays arent as realistic as madden and Its only $20.

madden is the game you want.  if you buy the game it comes with mini camps and situational situations that teach you a lot about football.  the mini camps teach you how to run good with your running back, how to fill a open hole with your linebacker, how to scramble with your quarter back.  and the more you play and it and watch nfl games the more you will see how close madden is to real life.  and if i was you id wait like 3-4 more months and get madden 08 which is really supposed to be the next gen madden that everyone has been waiting for.  and the formations and stuff like that arent a big deal, it just seperates them in the play book if not it would be a long list of plays.  the formations groups the plays that are similar together.

Basically, if you think the opponent is going to pass, you'll want to play a zone defense. Your linebackers and defensive backs will have their own zone or area of the field that they are covering. Their positioning on the field will give them a better chance to make a play on the ball if it's passed. If it's 3rd down and 10 or more, the opponent will likely pass. If you play zone against the run, your defense might have a lot of holes that the runner can get through. If the opponent runs a lot, you'll want to play man to man and maybe blitz. It is what it is. Each man on defense will cover one man on the offense. So if it's 2nd and 2 for example, chances are they'll run. If you play man to man against the pass, a speedy receiver might be able to get past your defender and make a big play.
