At first, I wanted NHL 08, but recently I have been hearing quite a few complaints about it; in terms of online, hitting/checking, and fighting. What are your thoughts? If you played either of them, how is the gameplay, and what are some of the cons?

I havent played either of them but I'm wondering the same thing you are. Also, can anyone comment on the games speed? In 07, even at the fastest game settings it was terribly slow.

i bought 2k8 yesterday. and i played the 08 demo today. overall presentation graphics way better on 08. sound/comentary is way better aswell. 2k8 is like a ps2 looking/feeling hockey game. ea made abetter product this year. 2k8 is gettin traded in for 08.

2K FANS INPUT

i have been a fan of 2k's hockey since 2k3. but this years, versions of hockey games, 08 is a better product

heres how it breaks down.

controls - 08s has not changed much from last year and has updated some of the crap they had. the pro stick is great, just still the hitting is probably still the crapiest system there is. 2k's layout is sooo much more advance now its hard to play with. but with some tweeking the buttons are better, but their pro stick feels weak, still i prefer shooting with a button and letting the pro stick dangle. 65/35 win for 08

gameplay - 08s has vastly improved since 07s. the game is alot smoother and it shows, with creat a play which i used. the AI is still some buckets of garbage in some places, but it has improved in many of the right places, hitting is still a major problem with this game, and also the defense seems to be playing weak even on agressive. 2ks gameplay seems to have lost a step but has improve AI as well, but the hitting in the game makes this an arcade style game. they gotta tone it down to realistic levels, still coaching on the fly beats anything 08 has to offer.55/45 win for 08

presentation - 08s looks like everyother EA game which isnt a bad thing, k8 seems like their layout came from idaho television or somin from napoleon dynamite. when you do pause during in game, the menu layout is better in k8 but thats all it has going for it. 70/30 of 08

graphics - the difference is small but 08 does have better player and fan graphics, which matters more, with k8 ice and boards looking alot sharper. 55/45 win for 08

as a 2k fan, i have to admit 08 put out a better game. which leads me to buying both.

I bought 2K8 yesterday (for PS3) and I really didn't like it. I have been fan of the 2K series for a while now, but I've always ebjoyed the feel and presentation of EA's games. After last year I started to lose interest in 2K, but I still like 2K7 better because there were some kinks with NHL 07. Now I can say that any personal issues I had with NHL 07 are all gone in 08. This is the best hockey game I have ever played.

The controls are intuitive and the look and feel of it is pure hockey.

I know what game I would recommend to anyone and it is NHL 08.

ive heard alot of people are getting booted from their online games...before the game even starts. Personally I think EA needs to seriously work on their busted a$$ servers...becuz I had the same exact problems when playing Tiger Woods online. But other than the sometimes bad online play...its still a terrific game

How is the online play?

I haven't had a chance to play a game online, but like Z-Bombz said there have been people encountering sever issues. I was on the EA Sports forum and that seemed to be the biggest concern over there.

I'm more of a single player type of guy, so it's not a massive concern to me, but it still sucks for those who love it and EA needs to fix this.

As much as I very much agree with you, with all due respect, the commentary in 08 is almost exactly the same as 07. I think they use the same soundbites. But comparing 08 against 07, 08 has a much better frame rate, better graphics (the ice looks a bit more detailed) and better AI. This is from the demo that I'm making this, however. I've heard that 08 has a bevy of MP options as well.

Personally, I'm in the middle of too many games to throw down on another hockey game. But I can't help but wonder where the hell the review is.

I just bought '08 yesterday, great game. Perhaps the best hockey game ever. Online runs smooth, I have played twice online, no problems, no noticable lag, im impressed.

Do yourself a favor and pick up 08, leave 2k8 on the shelf.

Buy NHL 08. The demo was great and the gameplay is vastly improved, even over last year. The skill stick is the best way to play a hockey game, just like the how the thumbsticks in Fight Night Round 3 are the best way to play a boxing game. The thing with 08 is that there are other great subtle improvements that make it more like an actual hockey game. buy it, you won't be sorry. Oh and just so you know, I was strictly a 2K series fan ever since NHL 2K came out on the Dreamcast. Then NHL 07 came out and my tastes changed.

lol, I was the same. After playing '07, I can only play hockey with the skill stick.

hockey games are my favorite games to play, last year i had nhl 07 and 2k7,i enjoyed both each in their own way,i have not played 2k8 yet but after playing nhl 08 i think it would be very hard for 2k8 to be better because nhl 08 IMO is the best hockey game i have ever played in my life,it's not perfect but than no game is but it comes real close.

i played the deno of 08, and i kinda like it and i kinda don't like it. I don't like the new controls, or at least i think they are new. havent played a hockey game since nhl 2k5. but i did like how the gameplay is a little slower, and how its much easier to make really sweet plays. i had to get used to the shooting with the right-stick, since im used to just pressing or holding a button. haven't tried 2k8, and i don't think i will because of what i've read and reviews i've seen. So i may end up getting 08

if you don't like the controls, you can switch to the classic controls where you can use the buttons to pass and shoot ect..they let you do that in the demo also.

This is what I expected...but there are actuallly a lot of new additions. The commentary actually gives you hints at improving your game A LOT, just have to listen carefully.

Overall, NHL 08 is absolutely incredible...Even if the online servers are currently not working 100% (although I've heard otherwise, my buddies have been playing it online for the last 3 days A LOT and absolutely love it with no issues) the gameplay has been improved so much, it will keep me busy for at least a year.

how can you get more than one person on your xbox in an online game. It just wont let me and my friend play at teh same time in a team game, it kind of "shares the controls." I am not sure what I am doing wrong, we are both signed in... any ideas?

NHL 08 is awesome this year,

the "on the fly ai" alone is worth the purchase,

I've had tons of fun with my copy.
