Is Ninja Gaiden II a good title to start the series with? I've never had a chance to really play the series. I heard Ninja Gaiden Sigma was extremely difficult, but I want a nice action game to wind down from Metal Gear Solid with. Also, are there any major story elements that I wouldn't know from not playing previous titles?

I bought NG2 last week. I've never played any NG game before this one, and the story wasn't hard to understand, but the story isn't that great anyway. It is rather difficult, though...expect a challenge. I just finished it on the normal difficulty setting last night...I died about 140 times over the course of the game.

Well that's great haha. Maybe I'll just replay Devil May Cry 4 again instead. One of my favorite games and it's not too difficult on the more reasonable difficulties. Especially when you've already played through =D.

Or better yet, I might just wind down with a nice good RPG like Eternal Sonata.

i would say Ninja Gaiden 2 is as ruthless as the Previous Xbox game, but atleast you can make easier progress with NG2 than you can NG Plus...the controlling of the game is easier I found Ninja Gaiden to be much harder than 2, prolly has something to do with the controller, or it might just be me

I would recommend the game even if you are a newcomer, but this game it a hard game, expect to die often.

As others have said , the story in the NG isn't a focal point at all . So you should be able to get into it in that regard . The difficulty isn't bad at all until/if you decide to try mentor . The first two difficulties of Acolyte and Warrior aren't bad at all . You will die some , but it isn't some insanely frustrating thing .

It's a lot more approachable then NGB, especially on Acolyte. Warrior provides a challenge for even vets of the series in my opinion.
