I just got my XBOX S yesterday and I played a game on it for a few hours to test it out. it all ran very smoothly but earlier today about 30 minutes or an hour into playing the DVD drive started to make a weird noise. When I noticed that it was I immediately saved everything and installed the game onto my xbox. While it was installing it continued to make that noise and it stopped for awhile but then started again. Once it was done I took the game disc out and flipped it over, it had been scratched when it was being read I suppose. I popped it back in to see if it everything was okay and I had no more weird noises coming from the xbox. Is this normal or flaw? I would like to know before I purchase any other games. Thanks!

The 360 is one noisy machine that really likes to scratch disks.

Always install your games (first thing to do, ALWAYS). That will get rid of scratchings and most of the noise.

Mine makes a really horrible sound for 5 minutes non stop every time I start playing a game, then goes quite and doesn't make a noise until I go to the dashboard and boot a game again.

Some makes of the slim 360 have Hitachi drives and these are known to be noisy,Now I have the model with the Liteon drive and have no loud noise like the Hitachi drives.

Hard to judge just by your description, but 360's have very noisy disk drives. Since you have a 250 gig (I assume) you should just install the games you are playing.

strange, my DVD drive is noisy but mainly just when I start up my console, less noisy when I start up games installed to my HDD but it still reads the disc for a little bit, then it's quiet... I'm wondering if because I never use my disc drive with games installed to my HDD that any mechanical lubrication is drying out from lack of action

My slim is silent. Even when the drive is spinning. I'd say take it back to the store if you just bought it. Tell them something is wrong with it and get another one.

The scratching isnt happening that often anymore, fyi another way to solve it, is like what he did bought a slim.. but ye older xboxes is loud as ****, make sure to install anyway S or old.. tho is could be a faulty drive perhaps - if you think its that, go see you can get it swapped for a new, repaired etc ?

I probably should have described more that the scratch like a ring. I was typing too fast at the time so I failed to mention it. Thing is, it wasn't 5 minutes into the game it was about half way through of me playing AND installing. I wish i had recorded the sound or something to mention more but it didn't sound quite normal. I mean I could always just install the games if I get more instead of returning the system.
