Assassin's Creed is by far the best.

Oblivion is great but personally i think Mass Effect might topple its replayability. It's up to you what to get though. For me it would be Mass Effect or Assassin's Creed-- both awesome games.

Oblivion is a sweet buy now with the GOTY Edition you'll get Shivering Isles/Knights of the Nine for the price of 1 game.. But Assassins Creed is just as fun IMO. I have yet to play Mass Effect so I can't tell you anything about that one as for CoD4 there are better FPS's on the console. But it's all opinion based.

no do not buy assassin's creed it doens't take nearly as long as oblivion or mass effect so assassin's creed is definitly worth renting but if you are limited on money then definitly mass effect or oblivion as for which one mass effect is more sci fi so if your into that then go for that and oblivion is more fantasy middle ages stuff.

Keep in my that Oblivion is also an older game and it comes with a ton of Frame-Rate issues.

My initial response would be Mass Effect, but that's probably unfair, since I haven't yet played the game. However, most of the reviews I've read make it sound wonderful, and it's a type of game that I feel like I've been waiting my whole life for. I've played Oblivion, and while it does seem to feel like it's marketed specifically to a bunch of dungeons & dragons / magic the gathering nerds, it's still fun to play (I am one of those nerds, by the way). Surprisingly (to myself even) I haven't really enjoyed assassn's creed all that much. I'm one of those gamers that get's annoyed by the pesky little things, i.e. when you shove a knife through a guards spine who is standing 2 feet away from another character that is facing him, and the other character starts screaming out "who did that? what happened? where are you?". LAME.

oblivion is one the greatest games ever, in my opinion. You really can't ever go wrong with a game like that, but it does have some glitches and frame rate issues like any game new to a system would go though, although they are mainly minor. With that said right now I'm playing AC and it is very fun. Alot of people say it is to short but if you simply veer off course and simply wonder finding flags or doing side quests you will def find yourself over 40 to 50 hours. Im currently at 35 and havecompleted only5 of the 9assassinations.

I didn't like Elder Scrols but when Oblivion came out it changed my mind. It has it's share of issues, but is one of my favorite games of all time. The game of the year edition has 2 expansions with it, which adds like 50 hours of game play to a game tat could take upward to 300 hours to complete every side quest, guild quest etc, however you can run through the main game in about 40 hours if you want. It's a beautiful game with a fun fighting mechanic. Choppy Frame rate usaully doesn't hamper too much. My biggest complaint about the game is the load times. It's understandable why there are load times that take about 20-40 secs(cause the world is stuffed with things to collect and interact with) I just wish there were less.

I'd say that Oblivion is definitely still worth buying but I'm not sure if I'd choose it over Mass Effect. I think it just boils down to whether you want sci-fi vs fantasy experiences.

I still find myself playing Oblivion. It is a great game. Although I haven't played the other 3 you mentioned, I have COD4 on it's way here via eBay.

You should pick up Mass Effect above all the others you listed.

Rent assassin's creed from block buster for 5 days (that's 10 USD) then buy Oblivion, that way you can beat AC in like 2 days and have a copy of oblivion.
