Don't get me wrong Oblivion is a very good game, but im not sure its worth the 9.6 GS gave it. I reckon its worth about a 8.5 to 9.0. For a game to deserve a score of 9.6 it should be pretty much flawless but Oblivion has its fare share of flaws imo. Firstly constant loading screens, bearable at first but quickly become annoying, everytime you enter a house, leave a house, travel, wait etc. Huge world but mostly empty. The towns are interesting but when you venture into the wilderness, you may find the occasional cave etc, nothing of that much interest. Glitchy, the amount of glitches is remarkable, read any Oblivion guide on gamefaqs and you'll hear about the many glitches to be aware of. I've encountered a few myself, gaurds attacking me for absolutely no reason, getting bounties even though the crime you committed wasn't seen at all, gaurds appearing out of nowhere. There was one instance when a gaurd was appearing deep in a cave, the quest required you to trespass into a basement. Quests that just won't work at all, only encountered one so far but it just happenes to be the quest to get rid of vampirism, I've consulted many guides and are doing everything as required but yet the witch still won't accept my grand soul gems, because of this im now stuck as a vampire which is a seroius pain sometimes. The gameplay is fairly bland imo, press attack and you do a weapon thrust, become expert in blade and you get an extra two variations yay. Most spells require a large amount of mana, meaning for the first 10 to 15 levels or so you are restricted to a small amount of boring spells. Cool to use but nothing like the spells you can do in games such as WoW.

The main quest is fairly short and not all that great, not bad, but I found myself wanting to finish it just to get it over with, rather than being genuinely excited about the story. The aid for bruma quest is probably the worst part imo, close the gates for each town, practically the exact same thing for each town. The oblivion portals are nearly identical, just a different variation of opening a gate, destroying the sigil stone. Each building that cases the sigil stone are exactly the same in each oblivion plain, kind of lazy on the games developers if you ask me. Plus there are only four or five different types of enemies that come out of the plains.

I have enjoyed playing Oblivion but at times it can be boring and often frustrating, a great game, but not worthy of the high score its been given by many. Your thoughts?

Its a good rpg, but its probably my least favorite in the series ( i own every elderscrolls game).

I think its probably the 3rd best rpg on the 360 (Lost Odyssey and Mass Effect being better)

Any Open-World game is bound to be glitchy,

but i found them easy to overlook.

Yep Agree...Its still a great game, the fantasy RPG adventure genre is great... and this game does alot

so well, the many towns and places are great...

Agree totally regarding the gates...the gate missions are a chore..I didnt enjoy doing them that much..

I could not stand the lock picking either....especially the sound it makes when the pick breaks...

But the thing is...Now I would give it a 8/10..

But when this game was first released, there was no mass effect or LO, with what other games were on the market

it was viewed as a 9+ game..

Mass Effect 9/10

IMO, the game definately deserved the 9.6 it received. You have to look at the game in it's context (i.e. when it came out during the consoles life cycle), and at the time it was arguably the best console game available. It is still by far the longest single player game I have spent my time with on a console so far this generation.

I think Oblivion's a great RPG. I've played it's prequel, Morrowind, and I think Oblivion is a huge improvment. But does it deserve a score of 9.6? I personally think it does deserve such a score, judging by the immense fun I had playing the game. I own both Mass Effect and Oblivion, and I think Oblivion proves to be a better RPG then Mass Effect (If not the best RPG on the 360)

It's not a good RPG but's it's fantastic action adventure. Most of the RPG elements have been stripped off but I can't complain, thanks to the mods on the PC version, I've played the game for 200 hours.

I enjoyed the game but it could have been MUCH better; the combat was clunky, dungeons were exactly the same and 99% of the world was as exciting as double Maths. It's impreresive how vast the place is but its pointless if its as lifeless as it is. Mass Effect and Lost Odyssey are a lot better imo.

I think it's amazing, but certainly not the best on 360. Lost Odyssey or Eternal Sonata gets that one.

I thought oblivion was fine. I was kind of disappointed as I still think Morrowind is better. I do agree 9.6 was maybe a little too high, but that was two years ago so i don't get how it matters.

Id give oblivion a 9.5 and morrowind a 9

Dude oblivion for me was like OMG awesome. I absolutley adored it. I mean I clocked in over 150 hours

Lost Oddssey is also great but a completely different style of game and the same goes for Mass Effect

I just dont think I could compare the three being so different

I agree with some of your points, but I'd still give this game 9.6. The sheer scope, and all the things you can do and see is astonishing.

Bear in mind two things:

1.) This game was released only three months or so after the 360 launched. Bethesda managed to program an awesome game in a very short space of time. If Oblivion was being released now it would probably have fewer bugs simply because Bethesda will have had more programming experience with the 360. As an aside, this is one of the many things that will make Fallout 3 great.

2.) Any game that has kept me playing for over two years - and I haven't even got Shivering Isles yet - is well worth a 9.6 imo.

well the gameplay (combat) are never very good in rpg's. That's not the point. The combat is better than most rpg's I've played. But I do agree about the guards and loading times. I'd give it a 9/10

GTA IV got a 10 and it had bugs so I don't see why it should be such a knock on Oblivion.

this is the same thing that will happen to gta4. when oblivion came out no one would entertain any critiscism of it's greatness, but now it's been a couple of years and people will admit it was a good game but with many faults. the same i think will happen with gta4. both games are beautiful and vast but slightly shallow in variety and things to do within the huge world they maintain. i would have given oblivion an 8.5, very fun to play, but not a breathtaking experience.

Let's face it. Reviews will never, ever be accurate. While it's obvious reviewers will overlook loading and glitches in one game and fail to mention it at all in their reviews but they will nitpick every nook and cranny on a game like Mass Effect to bring down it's score. I think it's favoritism, or advertising deals involve. Your guess is as good as mine. There will always be that missing gap of why that game got away with that issue/flaw while this game was repeatedly butchered over one little mistake. That is gaming propaganda.

I think the game is great but the major flaws are that despite the massive world, there's almost nothing to it. there's no reason for me to explore Bruma at all and heck, I dont even know half the city names by heart.

also, the combat system felt really weak to me. It felt like a hack and slash despite all the magic and bows, etc.

Oblivion was a great game, but all you guys have got to remember the game was made 2 years AGO! It was definitely the best of it's time. Of course, the game will never compete in todays RPG's such as Lost odyssey, blue dragon, eternal Sonata, etc. but it was definitely great. yea they were alot of glitching, but to have a game that massive is bound to have all sorts of bugs. Bottom line it deserves the 9.6 rating

Totally agree with this guy; he's right on. While Oblivion did have some flaws, the pros far far outweighed the cons. You could really get sucked into the world's culture and atmosphere. NPCs were no longer stationary; they moved around town, ate and drank at bars, slept in beds, visited others and engaged in other NPC conversations. How often do you see these things happen in other RPG games? Not too often.

It deserved a 9.6. If you look at any videogame long enough, you'll find flaws with those games. Even the great Metal Gear and Final Fantasy games have flaws to them. Like others have mentioned, this was released just months after the XBox 360 launch. This game didn't come out this year. This game was really testing the 360 console with the graphics and such. Oblivion is an amazing adventure with so much to offer.

I loved this game. It was the first game I played on my xbox 360 and I think it really showed off what the xbox 360 could do. The story was really great on top of the graphics. Now I didn't play the expansion for xbox 360 put I did for pc and it was really good too.

if oblivion had everything it had plus the amount of content that was in morrowind i would say it would be deserving of a near perfect rating, maybe still would be able to improve in combat slightly for a perfect grade.

Oblivion is my favorite rpg and for that matter my favorite 360 game.

I do see where you're coming from with some of the complaints (lots of fairly length load times, a few glitches, a so-so main questline), but most all of your complaints are easy disregarded when you think about how big the game is and how much you can do.

In the case of this game I think we can forgive a few minor issues.

Seriously, though. Two words: Vile Lair...

If you're stuck as a vampire, you're missing out on the entire experience. It makes the game so much more frusturating..

I really enjoyed Oblivion, the graphics are pretty good for its age. There should definetely be an Elder Scrolls V, that would awesome, the graphics, weapon selection, scenery. (It would probably outsell GTA IV)

I totally disagree with the TC. This game got a 9.6 only because of a few hitches in the frame rate from time to time and because of the frequent (yet short) load times. Otherwise, this game would've have gotten a 10 had it not been for those two things. I've never encountered any glitches that you speak of.

I think 9.6 is a fair score, brilliant RPG alround... I dont care about a few bugs as long as most of the core gameplay works :)
